There are two microphones for stereo, it's unlikely. Here are some suggestions:

  1. You're holding down the button while recording. Holding the button mutes sound; let go.
  2. You've got your finger over the microphone(s).
  3. You've turned off the playback volume by mistake; play a movie and use the ZOOM lever to adjust.

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately I have tried your suggestions and it's still not recording any sound. I turned the volume up on the playback and there was nothing. Do you have any more ideas?

The only remaining possibility is that it's affected by the volume setting in the setup menu. (Menu, setup (wrench icon), volume.) I didn't suggest this at first, because I'm expecting that it is overridden by the 'zoom lever volume' function. If you try this last possibility (but why would it be wrong in the first place???) with no luck, I think you have to return it to the store - in my opinion it must be faulty. I've searched your manual from end to end and there's nothing. In the section "taking motion pictures" it even says specifically that "recording with muted sound is not possible".

Perhaps the microphone was muted while you were making the original recording? Have you tried playing back a new recording with the microphone active?

New noise

sounds like a ground issue to me. that sounds like either 60 cycle hum, or a loose or broken ground. You can probably do an ohmmeter check, first, with no power, and see if you have continuity. That's not unusual for mikes of the seniority of your equipment.

No audio for making videos or when i use the sound recorder. appears not to be enabled but computer audio works ( brand new puter Dell insperation 1 2020 windows 8 )

press the Windows key and type Control Panel then click below the search bar on settings. Control panel should show up on the left, just click on it. Go to Sounds settings and make sure your microphone levels are up. Also, if there are any choices for recording devices, try them all. Most of the time it is because you don't have your settings correct in the control panel. If that doesn't work, make sure windows update has the latest drivers. And last of all, try a different microphone.

How to record videos with sound

Sound and Video are opposites, therefore it is impossible to record a video using sound. (I may have got the question wrong, but here's the other answer)

Your Microphone could be broken or muted. flick through all of the options in settings to find any options to mute the mic when recording videos. If there is no option for that, either try turning up the volume to full or consider either getting the microphone replaced or consider getting a new camera.

My brand new MXL Studio 1 USB microphone will not work in my Macbook. In System Preferences, under sound, the microphone does not show up.

There is a known problem with the signal ground of the usb chip on some computers. To resolve this error a hardware modification (additional GND connection) must be carried out inside the microphone. This should be done by qualified MXL service personel only.

No sound being recorded when videoing on my Canon sd1200. Cant find a microphone volume option in the menu. Could be broken. Its a brand new camera

It sounds like you may be in "Fast Frame Rate" video mode. Turn on the camera to video mode, then press right/left to select normal 640 pixel video. (Depending on the camera model, you may or may not have to press "Func" or "Func Set" first).
