Do you have to soak the filter to clean it. - Honeywell HCM-6011i Humidifier

I generally use White Distilled Vinegar. Clean your unit out the best you can with warm soapy water first and then soak or add the straight vinegar into the filter containment area and use a mild bleach solution for the water tank and soak and swish a little for 15 minutes then drain and rinse with fresh cold water and let air dry. The mineral deposits will slowly dissolve but will still take some scrubbing with a blue pan scrubbing pad or hard toothbrush. Depending on how hard your water is and if you use a water treatment additive will make a big difference in the cleaning process. Some people prefer to use distilled water in cool units as well as steam since it is almost completely mineral free and doesn't cost to much. Regular cleanings based on useage and water condition will greatly help the life and good operation of any humidifier including periodic filter changes if required.

if it is hard and crusty with calcium, it's time for a new one. CLR is a product you can find in most hardware stores, soak it in a solution as instructed on can, but usually you just buy new filters every year...

Soak the filters in a solution of 8 oz of white vinegar per gallon of water for about 20 minutes once per week and rinse well.

Better yet, do this once every 2 weeks, and on the off weeks soak the filters in a beach and water solution (rinse well) to keep the mold and bacteria growth from becoming a problem. I also add about a teaspoon of vinegar or a teaspoon of bleach (one or the other, not both at the same time) to the water when I fill the tank.

That helps keep the calcium scale from forming and it keeps the unit itself MUCH cleaner.

best solution I have found to clean them is to buy yourself some (CLR) seems to work the best, I would recommend soaking as much of it as possible, the longer you let it work the better the results, hope that helped

2. Lift the main housing and remove the water dispersion tray and the PermaWick™ Filters. The motor is attached to the main housing. Do not place the motor near water. Do not use a wet towel on the motor or motor housing as electrical shock may occur.

How to clean your filter:

After soaking, rinse it several times with clean water. Place the PermaWick™ Filter in a location where it can drip dry while you clean the other parts of your humidifier.

They say the frequency that you will have to clean your filter depends on yoru quality of water. The harder the water you have the more you will have to clean it.

2 things could be happening.
#1. Your water has gotten harder in the last year and more deposits are getting caught on the filter. Try soaking it in water and vinegar for an hour. This should clean some of the deposits out and extend the life of your filters. Everytime it gets hard try soaking it.

#2. Your machine is running out of water before you can refill. When this happens and the filters dry out, they aren't as good afterwords.

I would advise trying to clean them with vinegar and water and making sure your machine is always full.
