The video format support is pretty poor, you need to use the bundled software to convert the video to a format that the player can recognize. If this isn't working for you, you may have a bum device.

There maybe a software error with the programming of the player. Make sure it is not equiped with a hold button because that will also keep it from responding to the buttons. If the battery comes loose take it our and reconnect it to the computer and see if it recognize it. If it does recognize the player try to update the software.
You have to use software to convert your files into WMV, AVI, Mpreg-1 or MPEG-2, at 320 × 240. WinFF which is open source software is good for converting videos to any format http://winff.org/html_new/
Let the battery completely drain, and after a while charge it using the charger available else thru computer without turning it on.. let it charge for 50% and then try switching it on. Try this if not get back to me.
press and hold play button while turning it on...that should take you to the recovery mode...use the cleanup option and that should set it right..
if its not turning on at all,connect it to charge and check f the blue light blinks...if its blinking,let it charge for hours together...
if you want to put DVD onto creative Zen, fine, you can use iOrgsoft DVD to Creative Zen converter to remove the DRM(Digital Right Management) and regional restriaction from DVD, and you can also use it to convert DVD to avi, wmv or mpg for playback on creative zen.
Try going to the memory card option on the main menu, then go to 'Removable Storage', then the Zen should either tell you to connect a USB cord or insert a memory card. Try it, if not I dont know.
on the cd that came with it there should be a media player made for it so if you have the cd upload it and then try to upload videos through there ,please write back
