There is a black rectangle approximately 3" wide around the picture. I don't think it is the caption button I looked at that. I'm pretty sure it isn't the picture tube going out. Looks like something that has been selected, but I don't know what to unselect.

Tv still have captionning is on or text in on.Check the tv remote look for a button that said CC,used the button pushes a couples times make sure all like CC 1,2,3 all to off. Also tries tv menu look for captionning functions like Text 1,2,3 to all off.The black rectangle square on the screen, will disapper.
That box appears to be from the close caption feautre. If you have the original remote you can disable using the menu and go to audio functions and look for close caption to turn it OFF.
Do you have the user's guide for this TV?
If you do not, could you provide the model number of your TV?
If it is a large black rectangle that blots out the middle of the screen then you need to check your CC (closed caption) setting. Make sure the closed caption is turned off. I'm not up to date on the newer sets, but a lot of the older ones had more than one CC setting. One setting ran the captioning across the bottom, another put it in a big black box in the center of the screen. Most places didn't support the full text so all that showed was a big black rectangle on the screen. Since I'm not sure exactly what your rectangle looks like, this is my best estimate of your problem. Hope this helps.
the black rectangle appears as soon as the channel indicator goes off. someone has turned on the closed captioning in the menu of the set. it is in the "text" mode. go into the menu and turn off the closed caption feature.
Sounds like you have the TV in the "close caption " mode (text), turn off. 2. Check batteries and the mode the remote is in; eg TV, VCR, Cable & ect. Good Luck, big IRISH.
My mother-in-law had this problem on a Quasar for two years before she finally mentioned it. The rectangle is a text box for closed captioning or for a demonstation list of features, but without the text. I restored the factory presets and poof... problem solved.
Look in the manual and find how to restore the factory settings - it will probably be some weird combination of buttons that you would never guess. On her set, which has a built-in VCR, it was simultaneously pressing "play" and "FF" (on the set, not the remote) for five seconds until the set powered down. Yours will probably be something different but equally odd. That should get rid of the black rectangle. Then you go through the initial setup and you're back in business.
Try pressing the "View" button on the remote control a couple times -- it sounds like you have the picture-in-picture mode turned on but with nothing showing on the second input.
What you are seeing is called a TEXT box....it is a feature of
the closed-caption option....enter menu page for closed- caption to turn off text box.........................T.
It's the closed captioning. The reason it doesn't go away when you press the "caption" button is because there are four option for closed captioning: Text 1, Text 2, Text 3, and Text 4. The fifth option, which has no designation, is the "off" option. Using the remote, just click on the "caption button until the option has no designation.
Mine was a large black rectangle in the middle of the picture. It's not like Nina3's problem.
