Depends on the type of pump - inline or distributor type or individual pumping elements?
In the absence of accurate marks there are various methods that could be employed but all will need manufacturer's data to set the engine to either tdc or to injection point and then to proceed to time the pump to the engine by a method known as "spill timing" for the inline pump or the distributor type of which there are 3 main types, the commonest having a hydraulic governor, uses an adaptor and dial gauge.
Diesel injection pumps need to be timed to the engine. You have to set the engine to top centre on number one cylinder and compression stroke, then set the injection pump to number one, should be a line to line up or a pin to install to set pump to number one. Then install the pump and bolt it on
Is the fuel flow strong at the injection pump ? If not you may have a partial blockage inside the tank, wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filters either. I had a similar problem with my 350 JD dozer
I checked the tank and found some debris covering the outlet hole,
debris removed problem fixed.
Also check all your fuel lines, if all the above is good, than start cracking each injector one at a time with the machine running
as long as it will run, you will notice a bad injector by the difference in sound , a good injector will cause rough idling l a bad one will not.
Crack open the line coming into the injection pump from the fuel pump (near the top of inj. pump, towards firewall). Pump the lever on fuel pump until fuel comes out of loosened line. Tighten line. Loosen at least two injector lines at injection pump head. Crank engine with starter until fuel pulses from loosened lines. Tighten lines. Crank engine again. Engine should begin firing on these cylinders first, followed by the remaining cylinders.
injection pump timing is critical on a diesel. Take it to an accredited diesel specialist and he will have the necessary equipment to do the job right.
Find TDC on the compression stroke, there are timeing marks on the drive shaft for the pump, it well only fit one of two ways. make sure that the two dots on the shaft and the pump match up,that schould do it
