Black print is faded on my HP deskjet 6980 printer. Whenever I print a word document it will have sporadic fading. It will be fine in one place then all faded in another. I've cleaned the cartridges and even put a new one in, but still have the same problem.

Hi,

Here are some steps you can check to resolve your issue.

Check if the ink cartridges are low, specially the color black since if the black is empty, you are using the colored cartridges to print black. If the cartridges are newly replaced check the cartridges by reseating it. Try to consider changing the print quality high but doing so will use more ink. If still the same try to clean your printer heads.

Here are the instruction for cleaning your printer.

Open the printer tool box. (open a word, then click on file then print, choose properties, then services)
click on clean the print cartridges, then clean. Do test printing as well to check if the color is correct. If still the same calibrate the color which can be found in the same menu.

For more information here is the link for step by step instruction with visuals.

Hope this will help you resolve the problem.

Thank you for choosing fixya

How to fix text from printing unevenly as if the roller was not rolling consistently?

Sorry, I don't have one. Mine was a different problem; incompatibility between my old hp desk jet 5650 and my new Mac Book Pro. Just needed a newer printer!
When something like what you describe happens it is because the cartridge is dry; I change the cartridge.

*clean the cartridge printhead through the computer or manually (remove cartridge and wipe with cotton cloth with water). Also, clean the scanner window (glass).

Print keeps fading, even though using new ink

check your printer settings, make sure color only is not checked off, or if you mainly print black and white documents, you should have that option checked, you may have to go into advance printer options to do this.

Bottom of line missing

First try and go to page setup under file and set your bottom and top margins to .25. is every bottom half line faded? If so then yes you might need a new ink cartridge.

Not alinged

Does your printer Dialog box have a setting "Fit to Page" in the Properties Dialog box?

If yes, click on this setting.

You have not stated what documents you are trying to print. In Excel you may need to set the print area first. In most other programs fit to page will fix the problem.

Good luck.
