When you say your desktop has a black screen does that mean after your computer boots up its black or even right when you turn it on you do not even see the the Bios screen.
I know you wrote desktop but are you just using that as a term for a a computer so Is is a laptop or desktop?
There are three possibilities,
1) Your screen died
2) Your graphics card died ( if its a desktop it usually an easy fix, if its a laptop most times its unfix-able )
3) if its a laptop can you see a very faint image? if so there is something called an inverter that can be replaced to fix that issue
As you are getting black screen on PC desktop which can be fixed easily by following few steps carefully.
Step1. If you have any external device connected i.e. USB printer, camcoder, ipod or any other usb device then took it out from computer and reboot your computer again and check if it worked.
if this does not fix your issue follow step 2.
Step 2. Shut down the computer>>keep pressing F8 key on your keyboard up and down as soon as you restart your computer>>then it will display a black window advance boot menu>>Select the option Last known good configuration using keyboard down arrow>>then hit enter>it show your window operating system there>> Hit Enter again>>>lets wait for a minutes and check if it loading your window xp now and have you got everything back now.
If you have got your window desktop screen then issue fixed.
You have not mentioned that you are using window xp or vista or window7. If you are using window vista or window 7 then we can also perform system restore.
but first use these option which i have mentioned if that does not fix the issue then next time plz mention your Operating system whether it is window xp, Window Vista or Window 7.

Does the PC itself turn on (are there lights on the PC itself?) Does the monitor turn on? etc. Try to paint a more accurate picture and I can try and help you further.
