ZEN Vision 30GB buttons not working

So my player turns on/off, the volume up/down and the top two "menu" buttons function fine however the "ok", all arrow keys, play/pause and skips do not work. I contacted Creative about my issue but of course they will not help since my warranty expired three years ago. I'm electronic illiterate so I was wondering if I brought it into GeekSquad could they fix it for me?

    yerp same problem it's doing my head in, it's awful when something like this happens and you haven't even done anything wrong I think companies such as creative must build in things like this on purpose because in the end there just greedy business men trying to rip as much cash out of us as possible!

    I have the exact same problem. None of the keys working except the power and volume keys !! anybody got this fixed yet ?? anyone talk to creative to see if they have a fix for this?

    yeah well lets see i had the same problem except that mine had a little bump ":" anyways tried taking it appart and check if something had gone lose or something, nothing... the bottons light but i can't get them to do nothing...j ust on and off and volume.... some one help plz!!

    I have the same problem. I just got it yesterday and my right arrow key wont work. hopefully i can return it.

    Inexplicably the other day mine started doing or not doing some of these things as well. Power on, volume, menu drop-down and back buttons work fine. The skip and OK buttons work occaisionally but the play button never works. I can still connect to my PC and download music, etc without any issues. Basically the only thing I can't do is play music.

    Is it coincidence that these problems are all recent or indicative of something more devious...hmmmm....nah, probably just coincidence. I haven't tried Creative Support by phone yet but there is nothing online. Doesn't sound like they'd be interested in helping unless you were sending it in for repairs. Wonder how much something like that would cost?

The fix for this requires you to disassemble the unit. The Vision is easy to disassemble and this issue can be fixed easily by those comfortable opening up and tinkering with electrical gadgets.The keypad board is separate from the main board and can easily become separated when dropped. Disassembly of the Vision case and re-seating the keypad board fixed this issue for me.

The solution offered above by martycase worked for me.

I opened it up and had to 're-seat' a couple of 'chip boards under the keypad that are supposed to 'saddle' together. It works perfectly again, just like new.

It takes a little work and courage but if it isn't working anyhow, then what's the worst that can happen. Thankfully, now I don't have to buy an iPod.

Problem could be the combination of a bug that causes the device to freeze and the battery running out. If...
- the player won't turn on
- the player won't connect to PC
- the standard reset action won't work,

plugging the player in the AC charger may pull up the recovery screen which will allow you to proceed and reboot, provided the player has no other eg hardware issues.

Earphone and speakers causeing problems

Plugging anything other than the proprietary earbuds into that jack can damage the headphone jack. No one i know of has successfully replaced the headphone jacks alone - call Creative and see if you are still in warranty, because that player will need to be replaced

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
