Canon eos 40d Soft image on playback screen

Having taken a shot and then wanting to check the composition and focus on my Canon eos 40d large screen, when using the magnify button at maximum magnification the image is always soft rendering this facility useless for checking focus.
The problem is always there irrespective of what lens I use, program used or whether I focus manually or with auto. Can you help?

I think this might be a firmware issue.www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17779#DownloadDetailAct
Here is a link to Canon's website for your 40D there you will find the latest firmware version for your camera. Version 2.0.0 which includes 1.0.8 . In 1.0.8 item #3 in the list of changes it states repairs a phenomenon where reviewed images appear unnatural.

The LCD screen on my 40D shows the image taken, or the live view image, but there are large areas of missing image. Almost like the picture has been laid on a black background then a large piece torn out...

If the Live View shows areas of total black, the LCD is probably faulty and needs to be taken to a Canon Dealer for repair/replacement. I believe the pictures are still okay on the computer in this case?

Which of the three options of focusing to use on my canon 40d

Okay, since you're photographing subjects that aren't moving very quickly, start with the One-Shot AF. Use Manual AF point selection to choose the focus point yourself. If left to its own, the camera probably will focus on the nearset object.

The LCD does not come on when camera is turned on. How do I fix this.

The EOS 350D does not have a Live View function like the compact point and shoot cameras (Panasonic Lumix, Powershot, IXUS etc). You need to look through the viewfinder to compose your shot. The LCD only displays menu settings and images you have already captured (Play Button). Later models of EOS D-SLRs come with Live View but still doesn't have auto focus and you have to focus manually (eg EOS 450D, EOS 40D, etc)

How do I have the viewfinder image show in the LCD display

The EOS 350D doesn't have that function (Live View). You need to shoot with the viewfinder. Only later models of D-SLRs have Live View functions (EOS 500D, 50D, 40D, etc). You can however, playback your captured shots by pressing the "Play" button

No image on lcd

You need to enable the "live view" mode in the menu, then "set" live view as needed. When you are in this mode the shutter is open and the lens is flipped up to allow the image to hit the sensor and then to your preview screen. Because of this, the camera can't auto-focus, but there is an over-ride mode.

You may find the "video user's manual" links on this page useful to help you find and understand all the functions of your 40D.
