Sounds like you need to have the hinge assy replaced. This should probably be done by an experienced technician. Amazon is still selling this camcorder for $585 so it is probably worth repairing...unless there is another camcorder with more bells and whistles that you have been wanting, then I would recommend putting that money towards a new one.

first try a cleaning tape and this will not solve the problem have a service dealer check the unit.ru the cleaning tape once and try to playback a good old recording, if it does not work try to run the tape twice before testing .
do not run the tape too many times as you may damage the video heads.one cleaning session should not be longer than 10-15 seconds. most of the new cams are stopping the cleaning tape playback after 10-15 secs.
I also have a dcr-pc55e and i think i might have the same prob , have you tried a firewire card and cable you will have to buy one if your pc has not got one you can get them off of ebay for a few pounds , i have just bought one because i had the same prob , but now the pc will see the video camera and start to take the images from my camera but then it just stops halfway into the tape . If you can get it to go any futher than i can after this please let me know , i have posted my prob on here to , thanks jimmer . You could try give sony a call on 0870 5111 999 or you could give the handycam helpline a call i think they are called pixella on 00800 15 32 48 65 to see if they can help i hope this helps you . jimmer
