1. Download the BIOS from ACER.
2. Burn ONLY the .FD file to a CD.
3. Remove the Battery and Power Cable from the laptop.
4. Open the CD Drive with a Pin (Push a pin into the hole on the drive to force an eject)
5. Put the CD with the original .FD BIOS file into the drive.
6. Hold the FN and ESCAPE keys down.
8. Press the power button whilst still holding the keys. This will FORCE the computer to load the .FN file from the CD and write it to the BIOS of the machine.
9. The laptop will power up, you can release the keys; leave the laptop for 20-30 minutes if needed.
10. The computer will turn itself off once complete.
11. Re-insert the battery, power on the laptop.
There are other methods to install the bios if this solution doesn't work.
The FD file - is that the flashit utility? Thanks so much - determining which file I need is what I need help with. I already know the FN-Esc procedure. You are a big help!
No. I don't think you have to rename any of the files. If this works correctly it will run the file name as is.
Glad to help. Cross your fingers, I hope this works for you.
Found FD file. Will try this. Thanks again!
Sorry to say, this didn't work. I tried renaming file to BIOS.fd. Any other suggestions? Maybe it's not a bios problem. I never bricked it in the first place. My comp just went to a white blank screen one day and then when I turned it back on, got the infamous black screen problem.
To be extreme you could try removing the hard drive and putting it in another laptop to see if it can function. I don't think it is your hard drive because you should still have access to your bios. Have you tried connecting an external monitor to be sure it isn't your screen that is wiggin out?
Problem is, I don't have access to another laptop or external monitor right now. I had this same problem few months ago while it was still under warranty, and Acer sent it back stating they replaced mobo/CPU unit. Now I'm just out of warranty. I don't think it's the hard drive either.
On Acer's service guide for the 5532, it mentions renaming a file to Bios. wph. when doing a flash. I thought .fd extension was for Insyde bios. Now I'm really confused.
I don't know. It's tricky. I'm assuming that it sounds like things are booting up, hard drive is spinning, fans running etc. I suppose if you don't have a screen you could let it boot and see if you could get it to make noise in an effort to rule out the screen. I would be suspicious of the mother board if that is what they replaced last time. I'm not sure what else to do to flash the bios.
Well, after reseating the memory and hard drive with no luck, I've decided to give up and get another laptop. I appreciate your efforts to help. If I have trouble with my next PC, I'll be asking your advice again, if you're still around. Thanks.
give the screen a check. If you don't have access to one maybe you can run to best buy and hook up one of their monitors to see if you can get some signal.
I might try that, while shopping for a new laptop! Mine did come from Best Buy. Can you recommend another brand? I'm looking at a Toshiba online now that's comparable to my Acer. I think they're more reliable. I just need a basic model for email, internet surfing etc.
i have tried all of the above for my acer aspire 5536 hooked up the external monitor, checked the screen all the rest my problem is the download from acer does not com with a fd file it only has wph and rom files which dont seem to work with the re flash can anyone point me in the right direction

Hey, thanks. But I'm still confused. Do I have to rename any of the files after extracting from zip folder?
The bios flash with the .fd file didn't work. I tried renaming to Bios.fd - no luck either. Anyone have any other suggestions?
