Acer Aspire 5532 laptop powers on but doesn't boot at all - black screen only. I've been told BIOS may be corrupt. Need help with step by step instructions on how to flash it. Can it be done from a CD does have to be flash drive? What do I download besides latest BIOS off Acer website? I am clueless. Thanks.

Hey, thanks. But I'm still confused. Do I have to rename any of the files after extracting from zip folder?

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

The bios flash with the .fd file didn't work. I tried renaming to Bios.fd - no luck either. Anyone have any other suggestions?

1. Download the BIOS from ACER. 2. Burn ONLY the .FD file to a CD. 3. Remove the Battery and Power Cable from the laptop. 4. Open the CD Drive with a Pin (Push a pin into the hole on the drive to force an eject) 5. Put the CD with the original .FD BIOS file into the drive. 6. Hold the FN and ESCAPE keys down. 8. Press the power button whilst still holding the keys. This will FORCE the computer to load the .FN file from the CD and write it to the BIOS of the machine. 9. The laptop will power up, you can release the keys; leave the laptop for 20-30 minutes if needed. 10. The computer will turn itself off once complete. 11. Re-insert the battery, power on the laptop.
There are other methods to install the bios if this solution doesn't work.

The FD file - is that the flashit utility? Thanks so much - determining which file I need is what I need help with. I already know the FN-Esc procedure. You are a big help!

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2011

No. I don't think you have to rename any of the files. If this works correctly it will run the file name as is.

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2011

Glad to help. Cross your fingers, I hope this works for you.

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2011

Found FD file. Will try this. Thanks again!

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

Sorry to say, this didn't work. I tried renaming file to BIOS.fd. Any other suggestions? Maybe it's not a bios problem. I never bricked it in the first place. My comp just went to a white blank screen one day and then when I turned it back on, got the infamous black screen problem.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

To be extreme you could try removing the hard drive and putting it in another laptop to see if it can function. I don't think it is your hard drive because you should still have access to your bios. Have you tried connecting an external monitor to be sure it isn't your screen that is wiggin out?

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

Problem is, I don't have access to another laptop or external monitor right now. I had this same problem few months ago while it was still under warranty, and Acer sent it back stating they replaced mobo/CPU unit. Now I'm just out of warranty. I don't think it's the hard drive either.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

On Acer's service guide for the 5532, it mentions renaming a file to Bios. wph. when doing a flash. I thought .fd extension was for Insyde bios. Now I'm really confused.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

I don't know. It's tricky. I'm assuming that it sounds like things are booting up, hard drive is spinning, fans running etc. I suppose if you don't have a screen you could let it boot and see if you could get it to make noise in an effort to rule out the screen. I would be suspicious of the mother board if that is what they replaced last time. I'm not sure what else to do to flash the bios.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

Well, after reseating the memory and hard drive with no luck, I've decided to give up and get another laptop. I appreciate your efforts to help. If I have trouble with my next PC, I'll be asking your advice again, if you're still around. Thanks.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

give the screen a check. If you don't have access to one maybe you can run to best buy and hook up one of their monitors to see if you can get some signal.

  • Anonymous Mar 04, 2011

I might try that, while shopping for a new laptop! Mine did come from Best Buy. Can you recommend another brand? I'm looking at a Toshiba online now that's comparable to my Acer. I think they're more reliable. I just need a basic model for email, internet surfing etc.

My Acer laptop will not boot up.

You may have a corrupted video driver due to an update. For some Acers, press and hold F10 when starting the computer. Two beeps will mean that the bios settings have been restored and the machine may boot correctly. If you can enter the BIOS via F2, F1, F10, ESC or DEL, then find the area for display and change it to low resolution then save and restart your computer. Once running, you will need to uninstall the current video driver and have the computer install a new one.

My acer aspire 5532 just went black. The power button goes on' but no response whatsoever. Any clues?

Just try this steps

1) Shut down your computer and disconnect the battery and also the Ac adapter which is connected to your laptop, and then once your computer is Off just press and hold power button for at least 15-20 sec and yes do not lift your finger from the power button
2) Reconnect everything Battery as well as your Ac adapter, and try to see if the issue is resolved or not
3) Load BIOS setup Default
4) Try to go to safe mode
5) Do system restore when your computer was working fine

I hope this will answer and fix your issue

Acer aspire 5532 is in loop wont boot error windows failed to start a recent hardware to software change might be the cause

Because of the power interuption the recovery partition has been corrupted, the hard drive will need to be formatted to use the recovery discs. Go to www.acer.com contact customer support and the technical department for additional help, they have one of the best support programs available.

I have a black screen with a blinking curser.

Hi there.

Here are a few things to try:
1. Check your hard drive is installed and properly seated in its socket.
2. Try boot into Safe Mode by pressing and holding the F8 key. When you get into Advanced options select Boot into Safe mode. If it is able to boot into safe mode then it is a driver issue and I suggest you uninstall any recently installed drivers prior to the problem.
3. Press the "delete" key on you keyboard as the laptop boots. This will take you into the BIOS. Look for the hard drive section and make sure the laptop has detected your primary hard drive (the one with Windows on) and that it is selected as boot disk priority 1 in the boot sequence settings. If it says something like "NO IDE DEVICE DETECTED/NO SATA DEVICE DETECTED" then refer check your hard drive is installed and physically seated in its socket.
4. Remove all flash drives/printers as you boot up the laptop.
5. You BIOS may be corrupted and may need to be reset. (See below)

General info
All laptops have a CMOS battery. The main purpose for the CMOS battery is to store the system time, date and BIOS settings even if the computer is turned off or the main battery dies. Individual Acer Aspire laptop models differ somewhat, but the general steps are the same when replacing a dead CMOS battery.
Before you start
1) Read through the owner's manual for your particular Acer Aspire laptop to determine what kind of CMOS battery you have.
2) If it is damaged or faulty purchase the battery through Acer or a local or online computer parts dealer.
3) Turn the laptop off and unplug it. Also unplug any external hard drives, cameras, or other external devices.
4) Turn the laptop over (bottom facing up), then touch something metal to remove static charge.
Removal of the CMOS battery.
Remove the Phillips screws that secure the motherboard cover (refer to your owner's manual if necessary), then release the cover from the clips on the bottom of the plastic casing. Lay the cover aside then locate the CMOS battery cable on the right side of the motherboard. Unplug the cable then remove the battery.
The battery should look something like this:

2_6_2012_9_42_40_pm.jpg

Leave the battery out for up to 20mins. (Once the charge has left the motherboard it will erase all BIOS settings.

Re-inserting the battery.
Plug the CMOS battery cable into the motherboard. Slide the battery partially under the laptop casing (somewhere to hold it in place), then align the cover with the slots on the bottom of the laptop housing. Replace the screws then turn the laptop back over.
Finalizing
1) Turn the laptop on.
2) Enter your BIOS (usually by pressing the "Delete" key) before the operating system loads.
3) Follow the BIOS prompts or refer to your Acer Aspire owner's manual to reset your time, date and desired system settings.
Reason: Anytime the CMOS battery is unplugged for more than a few seconds your BIOS will be reset to the default manufacturer settings. If you make any changes to the BIOS that cause problems with your Acer Aspire, unplug the CMOS battery for 3 to 5 seconds (I find a good 'ol 20 mins does the trick if your unsure) to correct the problem.

6. You BIOS may have become corrupted and a re-install may be necessary. (See below)
Head over to the Acer downloads support center here.
Select your laptop model:
1. Netbook.
2. Aspire One.
3. The model.

Then click confirm.
Then at the tabs at the top click BIOS.
Download the BIOS.
Read the included documentation first (if supplied)

You'll need to copy the downloaded BIOS files onlto a bootable USB device.
You'll need:
1. A USB device.
2. The BIOS (that you've already downloaded).
3. The tools required make the USB device bootable.

I've found a neat tutorial on the web that explains how to make your USB drive bootable. Check it out http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=15265&mpage=1
(skip step 8 as you hav ealready downloaded your BIOS from the Acer support site, but read all about renaming it to BIOS.bin)

Once the drive is bootable, copy over the BIOS files as to the tutorial's instructions.
Reboot your system and make sure that the USB in inserted and set ans primary boot priority 1.

Your laptop should now update/reinstall the BIOS and reboot. Remove you USB drive as it reboots and it should be fine. If however this doesn't work then it may be a hardware failure and will have to be looked at by a local technician.
