It has been said today that Google accidently wiped out a number of accounts. It's certainly possible your account was affected by this, as they are trying to restore it now.
To create a Gmail account:
1) Go to www.gmail.com
2) Click on the Sign up for Gmail link
3) Create your user account by entering the required information into the spaces
To send an email:
1) Click on Compose Mail link
2) Enter the email address of the person you are sending the email to
3) Enter a subject line
4) Type your message
5) Click the send button
To check email
1) Login to www.gmail.com
2) New emails will appear in your inbox
3) Click on any unread emails
