If you turn your sound up on the computer, do you hear a dial tone? Does it then begin dialing? If not you may have a bad modem. Try dialing the ISP's number with your phone, it should dial in and you should hear various beeps and so on, if not the ISP is down.

You have to probably remove all the screws under the computer. remove the hdd memory and etc. The next part will be to check near the keyboard if there is something to pull out, underneath that there will be more screws to pull out and you will the cmos battery.
manually attach a phone to the phone jack you are connecting to and check if there is a dial tone. if there is no dial tone on that jack try a diff phone jack. if still fails call your telco.
if there is dial tone to other jacks it means the previous jack is faulty or damage.
It appears that your Acer has 3 ports in the front center bottomportion of the laptop. One of them should be for plugging in an external microphone, one should be for external speakers, and one should be an input jack.http://complap.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/acer-travelmate-2420-2.192120139_std.jpg

Before going to your friends house you used to connect the laptop up via the network cable. Since youve tried your laptop on your friends wireless it no longer allows you to surf the web via the wireless nore the wired connection?
To me it sounds like a possible mis-configuration between your laptop and your linksys router. Depending on what operating system you are using you need to get into your network connection settings (usually in control panel) and either set the TCP/IP to automatically obtain ip address or set it correctly.
If you have never had to configure this in the past ensure that obtain automatically is set.
