Yes, go to Start>Control panel>Power Options. There also should be a screen brightness key on your key board, that looks like a sun shining, with arrows pointing up & down. To use that key, hit the FN key, right next to the Ctrl key. Push & hold the FN key, while pushing the up arrow. That should increase the brightness of your display. Good luck.
you can get the booklet from the link below. You need to download it and make sure you have Adobe reader installed on your computer because its in pdf format.

Defective CCFL backlight may has the following symptom:
Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
Picture flickering with dim display.
Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Check out www.lcdparts.net for parts, repair service and DIY info.
Usually it's the inverter. Sometimes it's the backlight / lcd, and occasionally it's the lcd cable and or video card.
Easiest thing to do is order a replacement inverter from ebay. They're cheap and then swap it. You just need to remove the outside lcd bezel, it's just four or five screws and you're in business.
Best price i could find for you is at a site called AttBatt.com. Here's a link to the page with your battery: Compaq Presario V5201 battery. The price at the time i'm writing this is $80.99 US with free shipping within the United States. Best of luck with your computer!
Most notebooks have touch sensitive pads or switches underneath the keyboard, unlike a normal keyboard which is less complicated.
You can try and remove keyboard and check underneath, but it may be that the circuitry that works certain banks of keys is damaged or shorting.
Not a job for faint hearted i would recommend a qualified repairer.
