Any of the two will work it all depends on preference. If the modem or router is too far from the console then you would most likely want to go wireless. Here are instructions how to do each:
WIRELESS (WIFI):
Step 1: Turn on the PS3
Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings"
Step 3: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes".
Step4: Select "Easy" on types of installation.
Step 5: Select "Wireless" to choose what kind of internet connection you want.
Step 6: Select "Scan" to search for internet access points.
Step 7: Select your home connection when the screen comes up with all the found access points. If your home Internet access point requires a password enter the password when prompted and save your settings.
Step 8: Test the connection to check if you configured your settings right if successful you are good to go. If not go back and check your connection settings for your home internet access point. You are now connected to the internet!
HARDLINE (Wired): Must connect ethernet cable to PS3 before turning it on!
Goes like this: Arrows are the cable (===>)
Internet Line ===>Router ===>PS3
Step 1: Turn on the PS3
Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings"
Step 3: Go to "Internet Connection" and select it to Enable it.
Step 4: Select "Internet Connection Settings"
Step 5: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes".
Step 6: Select "Easy" on types of installation.
Step 7: PS3 will automatically check your connection network setup and set the settings for you.
Step 8: The settings will appear and press x to save the settings.
Step 9: Test your connection if it was successful you will see succeeded nest to "Obtain IPAddress" and "Internet Connection" you are now connected to the internet!

Testimonial: "Got it up and running in no time!"

You can directly use an ethernet cord using the port which is the most reliable/stable connection. Or you can use the wireless internet if applicable.

SOURCE: my computers connected to the internet kid wants

You'll need to unhook your Ethernet cable from the back of your computer and connect it to the PS3.Or to still be able to use your computer while he's online with the PS3 (good luck with that one) you will need to get a router and another Ethernet cord.It will split the signal between the two and allow them to be used at the same time.Pages 24 thru 30 (PS3 manual)explain how to do the connections with the Ethernet cord or wirelessly if you have wifi.Good luck!

PS3 wont connect to internet

Your PS3 should have WiFi built in unless you bought he 20GB version back when it first came out, that is the only one that dosn't have WiFi. But you can still connect it the way you want. You can use any type of ethernet cable, straight through or crossover. You need to go into your network connections in the control panel, select wired and wireless connection at the same time and bridge them. That should do it if you wanna go that route but you would have to have the computer on anytime you wanted to connect your ps3 to the internet. The best bet I think would be to just use the WiFi built into the PS3

Need help with ps3 internet hook up

you can go wireless, but personally wired is better. what router do you have? switch everything off, plug a ethernet cable from one of your ports on router to ps3 then then switch it all on. on ps3 go to settings - network settings - internet connection settings - then select easy - then whether you wanna do it wireless or wired (up to you) then let it do its thing, once its found all your settings you can test the connection.
Have you set up an account on your ps3 yet?

My ps3 internet has stop working

Hey Dragoon2008 you didn't by any chance forget to pay the bill for the month. Just kidding. Check to see if you still have a connection or an active connection on your ps3. Usually you just have to reconnect to your network. See if that works i am pretty sure that is it.

PS-III Rock Band - Internet Load While Gaming

Yes, the problem is with the PS3.
When using the PS3, if possible, disconnect any computers and devices (PDA's, PSP's, Phones, etc) that are using the internet both Wireless and Wired.

This should minimize the connections being used.
Another tip is disabling the PS3's Network connection when NOT using the Online features of the PS3. The Ps3 does not have to be connected so that it could be played offline.
