CHECK FOR 240 VOLTS AT DRYER ELEMENT WITH DRYER
RUNNING IN HEAT CYCLE. IF NO VOLTAGE, CHECK WALL
OUTLET FOR 240 VOLTS BETWEEN LEFT AND RIGHT SLOTS IN RECEPTACLE. A DRYER WILL RUN ON 120 VOLTS TO
GROUND BUT WILL NOT HEAT IF 240 VOLTS IS NOT PRESENT. IF THERE IS 240 AT THE OUTLET, START TRACING THROUGH THE HEATER CIRCUIT. LOOK FOR A FAILED THERMOSTAT OR THERMAL FUSE NEAR THE HEATER OR EXHAUST OUTLET. CHECK THEM WITH A CONTINUITY TEST WITH DRYER UNPLUGGED, OR A VOLTAGE CHECK WITH A HOT CIRCUIT.
Sure can!
Most Kenmore style dryers have a heating element that has a long wire coil inside it, (often there are two wires or elements inside one housing). Regardless, if you have carefully checked the air exhaust, and you find it is "perfect" ( means no back-up heat from a plugged or impeded air flow) and you have determined the air flow inside the machine is like new, ( no back up there either), then what has possible happened is the wire heating element has wiggled loose and is touching itself, thereby shorting out and making super heat.
The wire coils are usually held loosely in place with white ceramic rings, to keep them from touching the metal housing. If you carefully remove the heating element "box or "tube" and look inside , you may be able to see the problem. Testing it with an ohm meter will not work, it will simply test OK. The element is made to heat at a certain temperature according to it's length, if it touches itself, the elecrttricity will take the shortest route and may make your element glow white hot in one spot. Be blessed.
Investigate these five areas if your dryer is not heating up:
Proper Voltage
If your dryer won't heat up, it's possible that it is
not being supplied with the proper voltage. Here are three ways to make
sure power is getting to your dryer: First, make sure your dryer is
plugged in. Next, check the circuit breaker panel to make sure all the
circuit breakers are in the correct positions. Finally, check to make
sure no fuses in your fuse panel are blown. Any of these could explain
why power is not getting to your dryer.
Heating Element
It is possible that your dryer isn't heating because
its heating element is defective. Heating elements are irrepairable. If
yours has ceased to function properly, you will have to replace it. Open
your dryer's cabinet and locate the heating element so that you can
test it.
