To remove/replace the umd drive,you first have to take everything out of it - from the front.
http://www.consolezombie.com/PSP/PSP_Laser_Replacement.html is a good tutorial on how to do all of that.

My psp won't load umd's and all i hear is a scrathing sound

The UMD laser might be dirty or broken. Open up the UMD drive and give the laser a clean with a lint-free cloth. Then pop the disk back in and try again. If that doesn't work, you will need to get the PSP repaired or buy a replacement laser and do it yourself.

- Your UMD motor may be malfunctioning.
- Your laser may have worn down from use over time.
- Your UMD drive tray may be bent.
- There may be a foreign object in your UMD drive

Common symptoms

* disks fail to load
* extremely slow loading
* strange whirring noise when trying to read disks

PSP disk drive

your laser is either broken or unaligned. you have 2 options:

1. send it back to sony

2. or try and clean the laser track, remember the gear under the track also needs cleaning.

HELP PSP WONT READ UMDS!!!!

hi i just fixed my sons it wasnt reading umd's every thing else worked so have a look were the threaded rod runs threw the laser, in the centre at the back of the laser there is a little tab with a stamped groove in it make sure the laser is up against the disk spinner when turned off push the tab against the threaded rod hopefully it has seated (you ned a good light plus i used long metal twesers to push it down, easier to see on 2000 model than the fat one but you can manage good luck)

Psp will not load in any games

"tap" not hit.. the back of the psp, (where the game goes in on the back) and see if that works.. that will usually get the laser to read the disk.. perhaps the umd is dirty..  only tap on it "lightly" when you hear it loading.. i know that sounds stupid, but it worked for me countless of times.
