One of the most common problems with Zebra Xi, XiII, XiIII, Xi4, and 105S,105Se, 105SL series of printers is sensing or proper advancement of the labels. The printer has two sensors, top and bottom, that must be properly aligned with each other. The label passes between the sensors. The idea is that the label blocks the light between the two sensors and the gap between each label does not block the light. So the labels advance based on light, no light, light, no light etc... When you press the calibrate button, the printer is checking for this alternating condition. The printer also uses this principle to know when there are no more labels. Once the condition stays at “light” for a certain distance, the printer will show “out of labels”. Here’s what is important to understand: These two sensors can be moved left and right across the width of the printer. They move independently of each other and this is what usually causes problems with the labels not advancing properly. See my video at the link below and it will walk you through step-by-step on how to properly align the two sensors. **Note that the red light you see in the “throat” of the printer when you raise the printhead is not the sensor being discussed here. That red light is a “reflective” or “mark” sensor and is used for labels that have no vertical gaps and have a black mark printed on the backside of the liner.
Zebra printers use 2 methods to sense the gap between labels. Transmissive or Reflective. Your labels have a black mark on the backing. Your printer uses these black marks to detect the gap between your labels. Ensure that your printer's mode is set to REFLECTIVE & check that your printer driver media also is set to BLACK MARK. Print a config label to look at your printer settings.
This is usually caused by the sensors being dirty or the printer needing calibrated. Blow off the media and ribbon sensors and also do a manual calibration. If it is still skipping after this then it is software related.
There is a small thumb screw under the paper guide that has an adjustable stop to hold the paper. If you load it correctly, you should have one on each side to guide the paper into the printer. Also, the machine has either a roller or a bar to hang the labels on, correct? The bar has an adjustable stop to keep the roll from moving around while you print. You may want to setup the media sensor about 1 cm from the left of the printer to make it less subject to this type of error. They come from the factory very close to the edge of the paper to allow for some card printers to work well out of the box. Most people use labels and this is not necessary. I hope I have given you some helpful information.
Did you design the label? Do you have any control over the label design? This is usually a sign that the printer is trying to excede the page limit (usually by one dot row) and is going to the next label to finish. By making the label length slightly smaller, you can stop this.
recalibrate the printer in the set up.
Don't just do a quick cal from the front panel.
Make sure your driver is the correct dpi zebra driver, either zebra or my preferred seagull scientific.
by .5 of the label, do you mean width or heigth.
If it is heigth, check to make sure you are set for top of print correctly. Also you will have to back feed for a label that short.
