The problem could be with 2 component. The diode or the magnetron. normally when the diode goes bad, the microwave will make a humming sound. The microwave will tend to sound almost normal when its the magnetron. Or sometimes it will make a sparking noise when put to heat.
Testimonial: "The microwave sounds very normal when running (ie. the only noise I hear is the fan... well and the turntable makes a little bit of noise..."
The microwave sounds normal, all I hear is the fan (and a tiny bit of noise from the turntable but that was always there as well...)
Is replacing a magnetron difficult? (For reference, I'm a H.S. Physics teacher so don't mind getting in there and swapping parts, but I'm probably not interested in trying to solder anything together...)
Is replacing the magnetron something I could try to do, or should I try to get it to a repair shop, or is the microwave basically disposable at this point? (ie. the repair bill would run nearly $100 or something... since a new one is probably $150 or so...)
It is something u can do yourself. But since a new one costs $150, you're probably better off buying a new one. What is the make and model.
I see Best Buy has it for $160.
Unless you had an over the range microwave, then its not worth changing the magnetron. Thats a pretty decent microwave. Not bad for the price.

It could also be the solid state relay (SSR) that switches the power on and off to the magnetron. Likely there is a fuse in that circuit that could be bad. Unplug the unit open it up and check for a blown fuse.
