The switch is right where the protection tab is on the cassette when the tape is inserted. It is unlikely you can fix, and as it is a quality recorder, I would take it to a Sony Service Centre.
From the description it is the record head, and probably intermittent you get sound and video issues, there is no easy fix, if sony still supports it not worth the repair cost.
Hi, There is sound processor chip on main board that got bad and need to be replaced and it requires precise soldering work because it is SMD chip mounted on surface of board. Let me know if you need part number of sound processor chip of CCD-TRV138 Thanks.

Hi, Symptom shows bad CCDIMAGER in camera and requires replacement. (IC951 on CD-465 board, mounted at end of lens mechanism). Nice to know that you are tech person so buy CCDIMAGER from any part store under following part number..
A-7013-219-A CCD BLOCK ASSY (CCD IMAGER) (TRV138/TRV338) Good luck.
Your camera playback heads appear to be dirty. You can purchase a head cleaner cassette from an electronics store or take it to a service centre where they will clean the heads.
Check that the tape itself is not damaged, as this can cause the same symptoms.
I have the same problems. Makes me mad. I have a years worth of tapes that I can no longer view. My dog at peed on my old camera which was a digital one.
