To set up the pump to fit a Shrader (mountain bike or hybrid) valve:

Arrange the little adapters in the head of the pump:
Put the pointy one in first, with the point upwards (towards the valve).
Then put the flat one in with the bigger hole upwards (towards the valve).
Then screw on the cap.

Place the cap over the valve and extend the locking lever so that it's at right angles to the pump.
Pump up the tyre.
Push the locking level back to its original position flat against the pump.
Remove the pump from the valve.
Go for a ride!

Flip the lever on the valve end out (perpendicular) and secure the pump onto the tire valve, making sure it goes all the way in, then flip the lever down flat agains the pump. This should secure it so if you pull on it, the pump doesn't go anywhere and no air comes out. It looks like the handle flips out to make it easier to pump. Now pump up the tire until it starts looking full and check the pressure. A pressure guage is recommended. Lift the lever again to release (you may have to tap it off of the tire valve) when you're done.
Make sure you have the correct pump for the valve. There are two types of valve: presta, which is long and skinny, mostly used on higher end road bikes, and schrader (which you probably have) is the common type you'll see on a wide range of bikes. Your pump should fit a schrader.
