Okay. First of all is it a cd drive in your computer as opposed to a DVD drive? If you put a dvd into a cd drive it cannot recognize the dvd. A dvd drive can recognize a cd, but a cd drive cannot recognise a dvd.
Does your computer actually recognize the drive as being present?
If the drive isn't recognized by the computer try:
power off the laptop
Physically remove the cd or dvd drive
power -up the laptop without the cd/dvd drive
power off the latop and refit the dvd/cd drive
power it up again and see if the drive is
recognized
If the drive IS recognized by the laptop but won't play any disk it's probably the drive itself at fault. You can try gently cleaning the inside of the drive - the optic that reads the disk. However, the usual cause is failure of that optic which read the disk information. It cannot be repaired.
The alternative to fitting a new drive is to buy a portable dvd drive. They connect via a usb cable. Have a look on Ebay
When you click Start/My Computer is the DvD drive shown as one of your devices? If not then try the steps below: Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, turn the laptop over and remove the one screw that secures the dvd drive and pull the drive out. After 20 seconds plug the DvD drive back in, and then try booting to see if it is recognized. If the drive is not recognized then you will have to remove upper and lower filters.
If you are talking about the drive won't play a dvd then that's another issue. Most times computers have a hard time playing something that was created by someone else. Try a store purchased DvD and see if it recognizes and plays it.
Hi there! May be a corrupt driver issue. Go to your device manager/DVD drives/right-click & uninstall. Restart machine & let windows look for the drivers & install them. Pls send us your feedback as it's very important for us. Good luck!
Reboot the computer and go into the BIOS, see if its recognized in there, if its not recognized then you'll need to turn the computer off and unseat and reseat the cable and the power connector to the dvd drive. Then turn on the computer again and go into the BIOS, if the dvd drive is still not recognzied then you'll need to replace the drive.
If the dvd drive is recognized in the BIOS and not in windows then you'll need to go into the system restore in windows and choose a date the last time the computer was working, it will restore your computer back to this date and reboot. At that point it should recognize your dvd drive. If it doesn't then your OS is corrupt and you'll need to wipe out the drive and restore your computer back to factory defaults.

You need to install the DVD decoder that came with the drive such as PowerDVD or WinDVD. If you dont have the disks or setup files for those, you can download a free Windows DVD player program such as VLC Media Player that will work. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
