I have a White/Rodgers Model #1F78 Non-Programmable Thermostat connected to a heater in my garage. I live in the upper midwest and the ambient temperature is in the 20-30's in the garage but the display reads 71 degrees so the heater won't kick on. I have installed new batteries with the same result. Is it a bad unit?

- Set the system to cool then and lower the setpoint below room temperature. There may be up to five minute delay before the thermostat clicks in cooling. I have a White Rodgers model #1F78 non-pgrm thermostat. The down button for temp adjustment is extremely slow to respond. Is there a fix for that?

You did not say how old yours is. A new one is $38.00. You can look at home depot or lowes for thermostats. I have Honeywell, but there are several good brands to chose from

Wiring instruction for a White Rodgers 1F78 non-programable thermostat.

The White-Rogers 1F78 thermostat is a single stage 5/2 day programmable thermostat. Home Depot has the manuals for one model of this thermostat, 1F78-151, on the product page: https://www.homedepot.com/p/White-Rodgers-Single-Stage-Digital-5-2-Day-Programmable-Thermostat-1F78-151/202771121 . The wiring diagrams are in the Installation manual. The direct link to this manual is https://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfimages/f9/f955280d-67a2-4502-bb94-4975cd857c0b.pdf . Emerson Climate also has the wiring diagram here: http://www.emersonclimate.com/Documents/White-Rodgers/instruction_sheets/0037-6615.pdf .

If you have a different White-Rodgers 1F78 thermostat, check for the manual at Emerson Climate by starting at http://climate.emerson.com/en-us/products/thermostats/thermostat-manuals . Click on the Enter Model Number button and start typing in the model in the search box. I found a number of models with 1F78 listed. After selecting a specific model, I found a link to the installation guide on the left side of the page, below the search box. (Note: the manual link was above the Suggested Replacement header for the models that I checked.)

I hope this helps.

My White Rodgers 1F78 programmable thermostat shows a constant room temperature of 83-84 in the afternoon, but I set it at 77 throughout the whole day and night. Should I get a new one?

It sounds like the temp sensor is defective in the T-stat. I would replace it, get the newer programmable ones, they are very reliable and very cheap to buy online.

My White-Rodgers Model #1F78 5/2 Day Prgm thermostat turns on and ighnites for a few seconds then turns off even after reprogramming or resetting. What should I do next to get the heater to start working?...

If the furnace or boiler burners actually light for just a few seconds and then go out, the problem is probably NOT the thermostat. Most likely the thermostat is calling for heat so the burners light, but there is a safety device called a flame sensor that will shut off the burners if it does not sense the flame properly. It is very common for the flame sensor to get soot, dirt, or oxidation on it and then it can not sense the flame and the furnace does exactly what yours is doing. Most of the time the flame sensor can be cleaned and it will work again. Sometimes a new one will take longer to go bad again. Typically they are a straight or "L" shaped piece of wire about the size of coat hanger wire that just sticks into the flame. The coat hanger type wire usually goes into a white ceramic base which in turn has a wire connected to the back end. Steel wool works good to clean the flame sensor, but if you use coarse wool or coarse sand paper the surface of the flame sensor gets rough and gets dirty faster. It is made of some kind of "polished" stainless steel.
