Assuming the machine is installed level and this has just happened it sounds like you may have some springs or shock absorbers (dampers) inside broken. The springs hold the tub in the centre and allow it to move around without hitting anything and the dampers stop the springs being too bouncy like in a car suspension. Hold the centre of the drum and move it around left and right and towards and away from you. It should feel equally springy from all directions to the centre and when you let it go it should return to the centre without overshooting much in the opposite direction. If it doesn't feel even in all directions then a spring may be broken.
I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
I appreciate your vote if you appreciate my reply.

When the machine is on spin the machine shake so bad that it jumps

If the drum has an unbalanced load any machine will shake like crazy during high speed spin cycle - some even have a buzzer and shut down! Rearrange the clothing in the drum.

Washer clothes

Your load is out of balance.
If you have a heavy item, spread it around the tub to balance the load.
It is normal for the tub to shake during the spin cycle. The washer has a safety feature, if it is too badly out of balance it will shut itself down and sound an alarm.

On the spin cycle, it makes a banging noice, rythmic, about 2 per second....only on the spin cycle... can you help???

The spin cycle is used to rid the water by centrifugal force. As the tub spins, the water iis forced out of the clothes. The banging noise comes from the weight of clothes being on one side making the load unbalanced. The machine will absorb some minor unbalancing. If it gets real loud & the machine starts dancing, shut the machine off by raising the lid, when tub stops, rearrange clothes.

Maytag Top Loader Thumps When In Spin Cycle

My guess is that one of the three counterweights have separated from their support. Probably rusted away.
36 years is quite a feat. Today's machines would be lucky to 1/3 of that life.
Sounds like its time to go shopping.

Unbalanced spin cycle

it sounds like one of the levellers is out or the bearings in the tub are shot.

Drum off balance

It's either a bad suspension spring or you have a crack in the tub support.

Kenmore washer shakes violently during spin cycle

syrny,

Not sure what you did, exactly. First, does the machine shake when spun empty...and then with water only? If so, you have probably failed to tighten something or misaligned something. Go over your work.

No shakes? Rearrange your load. You may have a pair of heavy wet jeans which is throwing the whole thing out of kilter. It only takes about a half pound of sodden clothing to do this.

Lopsided during spin

This can be caused by a brake that has failed.  Try to spin inner tub with washer off.  It should NOT turn.  If it turns the brake is bad and is allowing the tub to spin when agitating.  This causes clthes to bunch up.
