I have a Magnavox 37MF23ID flat panel tv and the picture is black but I still have sound and can change channels. The tv is also making a somewhat high pitch noise while on. I have also had trouble with the tv recognizing the remote control so have to manually turn the tv off and on then manually adjust volume (I have a DVR so am able to change channels with the remote). Now that the picture is black and there is sound miraculously the remote function is working again. Any advice with either or both problems?

You need to spare yourself a lot of frustration and just replace the TV

if the power light comes on but the screen stays black, then your TV might be on the wrong input Channel. for example: you switch inputs when you play games or watch dvds vs. watching regular tv. Try to change the input

Could be main AV board not receiving the proper voltage due to a failing capacitor or power transistor. So I suspect a PSU failure.

Check to see in audio section of the menu if SAP (secondary audio program) is engaged---this will kill audio only on certain channels.

This feature is also used in many sat or cable boxes so you have to look there also.

check to see in audio menu for set and sat or cable box if SAP is engaged as this will (Spanish) cause no sound on certain channels.

The problem or setting exists in the set and most boxes providing signal to the set.

Not good. Make sure you have not blocked cooling to TV. It need s air flow. sounds like overheating

switched HDMI plug from HDMI1 to HDMI2 port and that solved the problem

hi i have a 50" magnavox that has a problem, i was looking at several websites and i find out the dirfferent posibilities.
in your case i have 2 posibble answers.
1) negative image
tv turns on and shots down in 2sec
flashing pixels on screen
dark image
has sound but no video
screen goes black and then return to normal picture
vertical color lines on screen no video
vertical color lines with video
vertical bars on screen
horizontal lines on the image
picture goes red after while
IT COLUD BE (X or Y or Z SUSTAIN BOARDS )

2) just left part of screen working
just right part of the screen is working
vertical and horizontal lines on screen
part of screen not working
some functions not working
no video but has sound
functions not working at all
IT COULD BE (LOGIC CONTROL BOARD)

May be that the back light is not working. could be the inverter board is bad or the back lights. both could be expensive to repair and parts hard to find since these sets com from China
