My intellifax 4100 has a wide solid black bar approx 1 1/2 wide down the entire right hand side of the page of faxes that I send. (faxes that are received by others). The machine works perfectly in every other way

Make sure the **** glass is clean, use a micro fiber cloth to wipe the debris/old toner or white out off the glass. restart the fax machine. If it prints this black line from a copy and it is 2" wide after you have cleaned both the glass and the white reference bar, most likley the scanner itself has failed.

The scanning bar has 28 leds on it and on my 4100 the 6 leds on the right side were flashing on and off,it could be abad connection on that part of the scanning bar caused by a jamed paper.
to tell if your machine is a printing problem or a scanning problem print out the help menu {press the reports key then the 1 key} if it prints clear then every thing with the print cartrige is ok and the problem is in the scanning part of the machine.

if the faxes going out have the line but coming in print out clear then the glass at the document feeder is dirty and probably needs cleaning.. check under the feeder cover and look for a glass piece where the documents go in this picks up dirt and typex and when it scans the document it thinks its on the original.. a soft cloth and some glass cleaner should clean it off..

lift up your document feeder and check for something on the **** glass

Try sliding the blue tab on the drum unit side-to-side. If that does not cure it, you need a new DRUM UNIT

Open the document feeder and clean the scanner glass.

You need a new cis unit, that is the scan assembly. Some of the pixels are burned out. Exposure settings won't help at all...

i'm not sure if you're talking about a solid black band or a bunch of little stripes running down page. does it happen when you run an internal report or only on copies? if its a black solid band, check and make sure the bluish colored tab on top of the drum is all the way to the left side. if its a group of fine lines, depending on whether it happens on internal reports or not, it could be the drum is going bad or you may have a bad scanner. write back with a little more info if this suggestion doesn't work.

It sounds like the CIS (scanner) has failed in both machines. Its no generally not a common problem. I would change one every six months if I was lucky.

It may point to something in your environment. I have have seen rust build up on the contacts of the scanner cause this problem. So if you have high moisture or are close to the ocean this maybe a problem.

Is this happening when you print or when you scan? If when scaning you could have something on the scanner bed... If this is happening when you print, it could be the cartride is defective.
