I have a Startech USB 3 express card that I use with my laptop (Win XP SP3). It works fine with my Seagate USB3 external hardisk but when I connected a the SIIG USB3 dock my laptop loses connection with the drive in the dock every 2 to 15 minutes. I tried both a 2TB seagate Barrracuda LP and a 400GB Seagate but faced the same issue. Also when I tried to format these hardisks via SIIG dock the format fails before completion. I have replaced the USB3 cable but the symptom has not changed. Can you please tell me what I could be doing wrong.

As you know, the Seagate sometimes has the firmware problems,so it seems that this firmware designed only valid in XP or Vista system, you may find the firmware update from the seagate official website

yah you must buy a Y-USB cable for your external hardisk. this is connection both ends are one is for hardisk and the other two cable is for USB slot of computer. why it two wires connection to usb because one wire is for Data and the other is for Power. If doesn't work..it might be a problem in your Operating system. i recommend to you to reinstall your Windows OS.. theres a 4 reasons why it happen appear the error... deffective USB cable..corrupted driver of USB device for seagate, virus infected of your systems..and maybe your hardive is deffective. Please rate if this is HELPFUL..thanks

SOURCE: I just pulled a 2.5

you should download Seatools on a working machine.....its a diagnostic program for Seagate drives.

Let it scan the drive in question, because it sounds like it could possibly be bad. The jumper settings dont come into play when hooking it up via usb!

You can use either external wifi modem and connect it to the notebook by ethernet cable or (better) use PCMCIA wifi card (second-hand e.g. from eBay?) or wifi usb modem connected direct to usb port. Just check if choosen wifi modem supports your OS WIN XP (and service pack - e.g. WIN XP SP3). In the Reference guide of the notebook is not specified USB version - it seems to be v. 1.0, so it is necessary to get an USB wifi modem compatible with USB 1.0 standard.

When i connect my seagate via usb nothing comes up on my pc, the light comes on on the external h/d but nothing pops up on the pc? help please i need precious photos on it. thanks

have you try connect your pen drive to the same usb port, is it working?
If Pendrive is working but not the Seagate hardisk. Most propably is your USB power is not enough to support the External Seagate hard disk, you need to supply more power to the Seagate hard disk by using USB Y cable(1 end connect to Seagate hardisk where the other end got 2 USB connector to connect to your PC).

External Harddrive Ignorance...

I've seen this happen with hubs being connected to external hard drives before.

Do you have a free usb port on the back of your computer you can plug it into?

That should fix the problem.
