When you connect the Garmin GPS to your computer your computer should recognize the unit as a removable drive. You can therefore get a display of how much storage the GPS has overall, and how much of it is free. There should be a folder on the GPS named Maps. When you copy the new map information to your GPS the system should ask you if you want to overwrite the existing files on your GPS. By answering Yes, the overwrite will take place and you should be okay for space.
When I update my Garmin I normally copy the old map information onto a folder on my computer first. That way if something goes wrong when you are installing the new map, you still have a copy of the old information which you can then put back on your GPS. I find that the copying process is slow when I use my laptop to update the map info. That could be because my laptop is old enough that it probably has the older USB 1.0 connections. If your computer uses the newer USB 2.0 then the copy process should be quicker.
