Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Dell OEM SB0240. I have constant snap, crackle, pop and static in my Altec Lansing speakers. They are fine when plugged into another source, radio, etc. The static comes through the speakers even when the volume on PC is TURNED OFF, but the speakers are on, computer on. I have removed the sound card and cleaned for dust, etc, tried using different electrical outlets, etc. the diagnostics indicate that everything is connected and working fine. This problem occurred sometime after I began plugging in an external hard drive and compact card reader to the computer. It does not matter now if external hard drive or reader are connected or not. I had no issues with the sound until about August 2010. It has now gotten so bad that I have to turn the speakers off so that I don't have to hear all of the static and popping. The computer is Dell Dimension 8250, year 2003, Windows XP.The sound card came preinstalled. I have the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 CD that came with the Dell package, no Users Guide. Can you help? Or, any suggestions?

try swapping the speakers around if the problem still persists either the speaker is faulty or the speakers plug/outlet is usually at the back of the computer you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make sure the connection is good or you might have to clean the dust from your computer dust causes static which causes your computer to overheat and all sorts of problems be sure to wear an anti static earth strap before touching anything inside your computer try cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the CPU central processing unit and your SOUND CARD dust causes static to build up in a computer causing it to overheat any many other problems: hope this helps

Your soundcard is going bad. The easiest way to fix is to replace with a new soundcard. Depending on what features you want the price could be anywhere from $35 to about $140. Hope this helps.
If the power light on the speakers isn't on, then the power supply going to the speakers is either in a bad outlet (test the outlet with a voltage meter) or the plug isn't firmly seated. Best of luck in your new home and hope this solves your problem. Greg
yes it could be going out on you, if you have empty slot on mainboard or another computer you can try it on,then you can confirm if it is broke or not. hope this helps, glen
I use to get that same sound but only when I first booted up. Is this only happening when you have the volume up and does it happen if you turn down the sound all the WAY not off Your MIC could be enable and on boost level. If you sound is popping from the music or other source is it from all the speakers??? I can try and help
