In the middle of a show the screen went black.
Power light on, no picture or sound, then the power turns off. Not quite sure, but probably a hint of some chemical odor. If it is the lamp, why no audio?

There could be a few things that would cause this. I would suspect that you have a problem with either the power supply board or the main board. Based on my experience, the main boards go before the power supplies. What is the model #
Most likely a power supply board went bad. the pop sound is bad capacitor on the board. Most bad capacitors will look like this:
The other picture below shows a normal capacitor in the middle, but two bad capacitors on the sides of it. One with the dome top and one leaking.
You can try repairing the board by replacing the capacitors or replace the whole power supply board. Most replacement boards can be found at a good price at Shopjimmy.com or Ebay.
if you have some knowledge about electronics u can open the back cover of your t.v and check if there are some parts that is being burned up, replaced it with the same part number. but be careful because t.v is dangerous because of its high voltage
i was watching tv and in the middle of the show the screen went black, but there still was sound. i turned it off thinking it was the cable for that program and when i turned it back on several hours later it still had no picture all connections are good.
If it is a LCD TV, and there is a faint picture, it is probably the backlight or inverter board (probably the latter). This is a common problem (especially with PC monitors). Do an internet search for your model and inverter, you may be able to replace it. Make SURE you REMOVE the power lead before opening the set !!!!
