Problem with the Whirlpool GH5184XPQ 1100 Watts Microwave Oven: In turning the microwave on this morning, a faint electric sparking was heard. Upon shutting it off and opening the door an acrid burning odor was noticed. I also noticed a burned spot about a quarter inch in diameter on the leftside chassis door jamb about two inches above the bottom hinge. There is a matching burned spot on the left inside of the door where the enamel has been burned away. This looks like there is a short between the the door aand the chassis when the door is shut and power is applied. This oven has seen very little use.

The problem is that the magnetron is arcing when it is running and it has found a couple bare spots 'exposing the metal'. The microwave uses a special industrial white enamel paint to prevent arcing, it is very important that the oven be removed from service until the situation is rectified otherwise there is a danger of shorting out the magnetron.

Whirlpool microwave oven model gh5184xpq

Models: GH9177XL GH5176XP GH5184XP GH6178XP GH6177XP
KHHS178L KHHS179L
Microwave will not operate (cook). F7 error code
appears on the display.
Electrical circuit interruption between L1 and Neutral in
the microwave inverter circuit.
Possible reasons:
1. Check door, hinge and cavity front alignment and adjust
as needed.
2. Check the operation of all interlock switches.
3. Check over temperature protector for the magnatron.
4. Check all Cavity Thermostats for closed circuit.
5. Unplug the oven for at least 40 seconds. If this solves
the problem
A. Check the Cooling Fan for proper operation or
blockage
B. Check the resistance of the magnetron thermostat.
It should be 0 Ohms, replace if necessary.
6. Check that the control cable to the 1100 watt inverter
is properly connected to plug P2 on the display PCB
& Adjust or Reconnect
7. If interlock switches operate correctly, replace 1100W
inverter.
8. If problem persists, replace control assembly.

There is not any power in the door itself. However if the chassis has chipped paint or corrosion the RF from the microwaves magnetron will cause those bare metal areas to reflect the concentrated RF energy and cause sparking.

The only Whirlpool Microwaves that have been recalled, has a model number beginning with XC and had a green sticker on the bottom face area of the chassis where the door closed.

I have often been able to clean and paint the bare metal areas with the correct paint to stop the RF reflection sparks. Using the model number above it is white enamel "appliance paint" that you would use to paint the bare metal areas. A word to the wise.... do not sand outside the area to be painted. Otherwise you re-introduce your current problem post repair.

The model number you passed is missing the very last digit that would be from 0 to 7 (Eight models)

I have a gh5184xpso 1100 watt microwave - i tried to turn on the night light and heard a pop and now the microwave will not turn on at all. i dont know how to get at the fuses - it is a over the range...

You have to take the casing off he microwave and you should be able to see the fuse in there. Your going to have to order the fuse so i would call a parts aplliance place and ask them what fuse that woul be and try that.
