I have two problems the first is that as i sew sometimes the fabric on the back side gets stuck and there are many pieces of thread coming up from the bobbin and get stuck the second question is everytime i try and thread a new bobbin the thread only gathers on the bottom to half way up and is uneven and not tight at all. I think maybe the two problems are caused by each other but im not sure ive tried cleaning the machine, thread and re thread it, changed fabric, thread, i dont know what to do now please HELP

Check the bobbin tension and that the thread is tight around the bobbin. Make sure that the bobbin is in the right way around - the bobbin thread should double back on itself coming out of the bobbin holder.

All of a sudden , as soon as i finish sewing a piece of fabric the thread will break. i can continue to sew as the main machine is still threaded.

There may be a bit of thread stuck in the bobbin or somewhere under the machine. Turn the machine sideways and look with a flashlight. Then turn the wheel a couple times and look again...Good Luck...xo

Top thread tangled in bobbin.

try changing the needle---flat side goes to the back side of the machine
also check the top tension
depending on the fabric your sewing on--the needle & thread have to work
with the fabric--example light fabric needs a different needle & thread than
a heavy fabric
check to see if the thread is coming off the thread take up lever when you
sew.

My Singer (model 237) sewing machine will not stitch the underside (bobbin side) of the fabric. Furthermore it does not seem to feed the fabric through to the other side. The top stitches (spool) will work...

Check and see if there are any broken little pieces of thread or lint in the bobbin case. Also you may need to oil the bobbin case....but usually, lint is the culprit. Good Luck.

Sewing two pieces of cotton fabric with batting between. using NEW clark brand thread, NEW size 14 needle, during sewing the thread on the underside of the piece knots up jams the machine after sewing...

Threads underneath is the top thread coming down and not being tensioned enough by the top tension dial. So turn the top tension back to 5 and test sew. Does this produce an even stitch tension top and bottom.

If this then is still giving the looping underneath, recheck that the top thread has seated into the tension discs fully, always raise the pressure foot before threading the top of the machine so the tension discs are open fully.

Also cleaning top tension discs sometimes helps, to do this, turn tension dial right down to zero, raise pressure foot, remove all top thread and "floss" between the tension discs with the selvage edge of a clean piece of cotton fabric, if you get lots of gunk on the fabric edge from the tension discs, then keep cleaning with a fresh bit of fabric. Thread, especially, black or cheap brands, will shed dye particles and this will build up in the tension device with time. You can also clean with some denatured alcohol, just wet the fabric edge and floss again. Just don't get onto any plastic bits.

Now thread up again, set tension to 5 and check that the top thread is in tension by threading down to just before the needle, lowering the pressure foot, and pulling on the thread. It should be firm. If you can't get this to happen at all, then the tension device may have broken and will need to be serviced by a technician.

Also if you don't have a manual for your singer you can download at http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals, just type in your model number and click search.

The tread gets all tangled on the bottom of the fabric

You seem to have a threading error. Try re-threading top and bottom threads completely. Sometimes the thread does not pass through the out of sight tension discs correctly.
You may also have something stuck in the discs so pull a thicker thread through by hand to clean.
If this does not work, find a spare piece of similar fabric and set all the visible tension discs to "0" and try again, then work through each one by altering the tension slightly each time..

The sound is a clicking noise that accompanies the bunching of thread on the under side of the fabric. The fabric gets stuck in the hole where the needle goes through from the top and I had to yank it all...

Open up the bobbin area and clean out any lint or thread that may have accumulated.

Thread the machine with the presser foot up.

When changing the position of the fabric (turning a corner or sewing a curved seam, for example), lower the needle into the fabric to prevent the stitch from malformation and tangling with the bobbin thread.

Start sewing by holding onto the thread ends and hand walking the needle into the fabric for one or two stitches.

If this problem continues, the timing may need to be adjusted and this does require a trip to the shop for proper service.

Threads keep getting tangled when I try to serge. Happens everytime I tried to re-thread it, it bunches up when I serge.

If you mean the threads get tangled behind the presser foot then maybe this can help. Try pulling the threads gently as you guide the fabric through the first time. Also, I sometimes put a scrap piece of fabric under the presser foot with the edge lined up with the needles (so it is further back than normal). Then I gently press the speed control foot and pull on the threads. This allows the needles to start sewing right away on the fabric rather than giving the thread a chance to get tangled. Hope that helps!

Thread problems

Try unthreading the top of the machine and with the presser foot up (the one you put the fabric under) Use a piece of regular size yarn about 1 foot long and go around your top tension like you would with your thread and floss it back and forth then pulling the yarn in your left hand up so that the other one is short but not out, drop the foot down and pull the short end until the yarn comes right out. Re thread the machine with your thread again with the foot up and try it on a scrap piece of fabric first. Sometimes you need to do it a few times.

Excess thread on back side of fabric

It sounds as if the machine is not threaded correctly so there is no tension and the result is a wad of thread on the underside of the fabric. Make sure your presser foot is in the up position and try rethreading the machine. If this does not correct the problem, check your thread path, sometimes you will get pieces of thread lodged in the tension assembly, especially between the metal tension disc. Make sure your tension dial is set between 3-5 to begin. You can adjust it higher as needed, but hopfully you won't need to be higher than 5, if so, you probably need an internal adjustment.

Timing

Question: How does one find the tension discs??? I have a White 1740 with a top drop in bobbin and I went thru the same problems as night_wolf above, then, ultimately, the top thread will now not pick-up the bobbin thread through the fabric. It picks up the bobbin thread without fabric in play, but once fabric is added (for free motion quilting) it won't pick it up. This is after using the machine for the last 10 days to piece and quilt without a problem until this morning.

I'm at a loss.
Tks, Candace
