I cannot connect my canon xm2 to my mac or to my pc. neither computer will recognise the connection. Its a usb connection into the computer and at the other end is a smaller connection into the camera. (not sure what its called) I have the camera turned on and to the setting VCR. The message on both computers is.There are no video capture devices detected. I have also tried another wire with different connections. Its like a usb but has a bigger connection 1394 is written on the lead.

SOURCE: Vista and firewire 1394?

Firewire works fine under Vista, but it's quite possible your USB to Firewire bridge doesn't have proper Vista drivers. You wouldn't expect Vista to include these, they would be installed from a disc that came with your adaptor. USB to Firewire is a questionable option at best... there are often problems with it. You may be better off with a PC-Card or ExpressCard solution, if the laptop is your only computer.

Also, when the camera says "DV IN", it's expecting video from the PC to be sent to it, it's not in capture mode. Most camcorders must be in either "play" mode, or a special "link to PC" mode in order to even be recognized by Windows (any version) as a video input device.

However, until you resolve the issue of supporting your Firewire device in Vista, nothing the camcorder does will be an issue yet. You should check the documentation that came with your USB to Firewire device, the driver disc, etc. for information on Vista support.

Are there any settings in the camera's menu to tell it to switch to PC Mode?

SOURCE: I have connected my canon

It looks like the USB port on this camera is used to transfer stills only. The camera has a DV port for a "Firewire" connection to stream video to a computer, but most PCs don't have such a port (Macs do). You can add Firewire ports to a PC using an add-on card. You will need a cable too. These things are available cheaply on eBay or Amazon.

I have tried to connect my Canon XM2 to my IMac via firewire, but it is not 'seen' by IMovie, FCE or FCP, so I can't capture anything. Thanks

Open the System Profiler on the Mac and establish if the camera is connected to the Mac's firewire BUS. If not, try another cable and also test is the camera's firewire port is working. It's either a cable or socket issue. Some cameras require that the menu of the camera be set to output over firewire, check this as well.

PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital Camera: Mac doesn't recognise camera...

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.

How do I transfer the footage I recorded to PC?

The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.

Windows vista pc does not recognise my canon 350d?

Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and see if any of the USB connections has an exclamation mark next to it. If so, select it and delete it. Close the dialog box. Now plug in your USB again and see if it automatically recognises the device (camera). Of course, you have to turn on the camera after connecting the USB (I've met people who have been stumped for days before realising that the camera has to be switched on in the first place)

Mac won't recognise canon drive

First of all, do not save any new file to camera's memory card.

Take out memory card, and connect it to a Windows computer using a card reader. You should see memory card shown as a drive letter (like H:) in Windows Explorer.
Download this camera photo recovery software

Install and open the photo recovery software, select the memory card, and click 'Start' button.

Canoscan 9900F isn't recognized by any of my Mac software

you could try looking in system profiler, to see if the scanner is even recognised by the system - if not it's a connection problem.

try connecting via firewire instead of USB (or vice versa)

otherwise, see if vuescan recognises the scanner.
