Question about Pentax *ist DL Digital Camera

1 Answer

Camera won't start, I have the 'flashing battery symbol' problem when I turn on my ist DL. I have tried many batteries but nothing changes it. Is this camera dead ? I see that it could be a regular issue on these cameras so has anyone found a solution? Many thanks for any tips!

Have you tried cleaning the battery contacts in the camera with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol?

Testimonial: "thanks"

Hi, thank you, I have cleaned thoroughly, not with alcohol, but the contacts are absolutely sparkling clean. The camera is mint condition and well kept. I wonder if it's the capacitor/internal battery failed ? But even if that did, I would have though it would boot up.

Even if the contacts look very good clean them anyway with typewriter eraser

How do i turn the internal flash on

There is a button on the side of the mirror box with the flash symbol. Pushing that should cause the flash to go up except if it is set on the 'green rectangle' on the mode dial, in which case the camera will cause the flash to go up in low light situations automatically

Pentax ist d - fresh batteries, no display, nothing. Where to start troubleshooting?

Measure batteries to make sure they are 'fresh' I have run into many bad 'new' batteries. And if they are the same brand people sometimes put the old ones back in by mistake.

Other than that without a lot more information there are just far too many things that could cause this problem - from impact to water damage to circuit failure.

Camera continues to show" no battery" when I

Hi Shipley I get exactly the same with my *ist DL2 periodically. It doesn't happen every time but often enough to be irritating. Sometimes taking the batteries out and putting them back in a different order fixes it - sometimes it doesn't. Often If I put them in and then leave the camera for a few minutes before switching it on - that generally works. (but then again.......

It's hard to tell what is the problem without a closer inspection.
It could be that some connection came loose. If it's like that, then you should bring it to a specialist. To a guarantee if it hasn't expired yet.

Before doing that remove your battery. Put it back in, try to charge it. Is it charging then?

Try a different battery. It's not unheard of for a rechargeable battery -- even a new one -- to fail. All it takes is one defective cell (there are many in each battery) and you're dead in the water.

Read the manual to find out what the battery symbol actually means.

The problem is with waking a sleeping Pentax ist dl: touching the shutter button doesn't reawaken it. To enable the ist dl to shoot requires turning off the camera and of course switching it on again.

This is a common problem with all the ist's. Try cleaning the battery contacts inside the camera with a pencil eraser and then with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

New batteries but no power...

Have you tried cleaning the battery terminals with a bit of alcohol on a Q-tip? Make sure the terminals are completely dry before inserting new batteries. I am not sure if this is your problem as it may be a lose connection between the battery unit and the camera. Best of luck.

Zoom Lens Fault

i am assuming you have no flash attached(front or rear curtain sync is a slowed shutter motion hence x 2 clicks)it sounds like it could be a sticky shutter and it senses a fault and shuts camera down. see the warranty and get it to an authorised repair service. its not a mechanical camera so sod working on it yourself you could do more harm than good. jason
