When you boot up your computer, there are usually tips like "for set up bios press F2, for recovery push F10" and so on. You need to enter the BIOS and see if there is Hard drive recognized. If not, then you need new Hard drive. Good luck!

Old machine, trying to rehab for daughter. Turn on, seet Toshiba screen, then see "Disk read error, cntrl+alt+del to reboot"

You have one of two problems. Either your operating system crashed and you will need to get windows reinstalled on the computer or your hard drive crashed.
If the hard drive crashed you will need to replace the hard drive first and then also reinstall windows.
In both cases it is needed to reinstall windows.
This is probably something a computer technician should take care of.

On the mini 1000 - tried to install Windows xp (tried Vista and 2000 also) after a system crash. Since there is no dvd/cd drive I used an external drive with a usb interface. It starts to install and then...

Hi, you need to ensure your hard drive is set up correctly! To install XP first press the F1 key during bootup, select the primary boot device (your external drive) in BIOS, save changes and reboot, allow files to be installed, but when finished, select delete operating system, partion hard drive and reformat, allow system to reboot, then commence new installation of XP. If your problem persists it is most likely a bad section on your hard drive, and will need replacing.
Hope this helps

System crashes completely. just freezes and never recovers. for some odd reason, when i try to run the windows repair, it crashes as well giving me the blue screen of death. i have three other hard drives:...

You are probably correct in thinking it a motherboard problem, its sounds like the disk controller on the motherboard id faulty.
There are a huge range of motherboards to choose from.
The mounting holes on the motherboard will match the desktop mounting plate, these are standard configurations.
Stick with the well known brands and with the functions that suit your requirements.
My choice of brands are Gigabyte, Intel, MSI.
If you are into gaming and video editing etc. go for a motherboard without a built-in graphics card and purchase a separate high end graphics card.

Harddisk not detected

Hi, I think that your os has been crashed. So insert your disk and boot your system and check that your BIOS will boot from CD (Boot preference - CD ROM). And install a fresh copy of your os. Let me know the result.

Hard drive crash

if your HD cannot be detected anymore..then there would be 90% chance that your data's cannot be retrieve. however, if it is still functional as a secondary drive but the partition is damage..try using FileScanvenger to retrieve the data.
