My Maytag mvwx655dw1 washer, the lid won't lock for any of the wash cycles, only on the drain and spin cycle. So i know the mechanism is working, but somehow only on one of the many different cycles.

Open top panel and cut wire at both sides of switch then nut them together without the switch connected at all. If it works then it is fixed but you will no longer have that safety in place or this should indicate you need a new switch and you have a working washer until you can put the new one in. (it tricks the machine into thinking door is closed all the time when switch is deleted from circuit.

Washer stops during normal wash cycle for a minute or more, and then continues. Would replacing the timer fix it?

If it actually goes on and finishes the cycle and that really bothers you replace it. If not leave it alone and allow a little more time to complete its cycle. The lid switch only keeps the spin cycle from going with the top open.

I have a FEX831FS4 washer/dryer. The washing machine will wash and spin, but will not rinse and spin. Lid is locked.

think ur voltage is too low..usually frigidaire brand washer is 220v,..usually starting of spinning has a high ampere and it need a high volt electrical supply..try to check ur main breaker for washer only..ur lid lock will lock after 10secs when it spin fast...

My washing machine does not have a spin cycle

I just solved this problem myself. It's the lid lock mechanism which is located under the top cover. When I manually moved the aluminum locking tab over my washer prompty drained and spun. There are four wires total going to the switch. Well, the solid white and the white/red wires control the lid lock mechanism. You can either replace the entire switch or bypass the lid lock by wire nutting the two wires I previously mentioned together. Now, if you bypass, be forewarned the lid will open while the washer spins very fast which presents a potential danger. For immediate use, bypass until you get the replacement switch. Hope this helps your problem.

Washer will not spin

Your neutral drain is not locking in.
Let the timer advance to the final spin cycle. Once there it should have about a 5 second pause and the transmission spin gears will lock in. If no pause replace the timer. If you have the pause and still no spin replace the transmission.
My bet is on the timer.

Washer will not pass wash cycle...Will not Drain

Nightshade, in most cases, no spin, no drain is a lid switch problem. If you advance the timer to the spin position does it spin? If the machine is agitating you can rule out the coupler. If you are sure that it is not a lid switch problem, then you are probably looking at a bad timer....Catriver..post back.
