I would suggest contacting Panasonic support. You can search for their website/home page for their contact numbers. Typically, manufacturers maintain help, support, upgrade, forums and FAQs/knowkedge bases to help customers troubleshoot their appliances/equipment. I have used similar methods, previously, to update/upgrade the firmware on an "obsolete" DVR and it has lasted 4 more years (still working).
You may be listening off tape and there is a lag of time between the record head and the play head which is what you may be concerned with. This is normal for any three head deck be it cassette or open reel. Slowing the speed will lengthen the time of the delay and speeding it up will shorten it.
I don't have a solution but I am having the same problem (same model DMR-E80H). It will read finalized dvds but won't recognize or play blank or non-finalized dvds. About a year ago I had to replace the hard drive . . . I'm just assuming that the dvd recorder is just slowly breaking down and will need some kind of repair of certain components. (I think we bought it new in 2003/2004?)
Not sure if you're still having problems with this portable, but the first thing I would check is to make sure that you've put the batteries UNDER the battery clip in the battery compartment.
Does the machine just make a 'beeping' noise when it tries to play, rew, or FF?
The motor has gone and would need replacement. Unfortunately, this part was recently discontinued so you will have trouble finding someone who has one.
Try calling Panasonic at 800-211-7262. If you have windows vista, you're screwed! They currently don't have the software update. They said that they are working on it. Yea right!!! I have three of these units. I should have bought a Sony.
MODEL 1009C ???
