DTC P0731 - Gear 1 incorrect ratio

Input and output speed sensors in the transmission are the most likely cause, They fail alot, relatively cheap to repair, if left ignored can burn up the transmission.

Good luck.

Did you have any codes? If so, what. Note some scanners will not read trans codes.

2001 Isuzu Trooper 4wd automatic trans. It will shift ou of 1st at about 20 mph into 2nd then loses power, rpm's drop until it slows to about 10mph then down shifts back to 1st. Any ideas why?

Sounds to me that your transmission is put itself into what is call (Limp Mode). This happens when the transmission fluid in the trans hydraulic valve body located on the bottom and in the trans pan are not within the parameters of the transmission computer. You can remove the trans pan and gasket to check for metallic material in the bottom of the pan. There is normally a strong magnet in the pan catch the material so I can't move freely through the transmission itself. It only takes a very small piece of foreign material to stop the flow of the valve body fluid. I would first take it to somewhere that had a automotive diagnostic scan tool that can read transmission codes to see if there are any active codes. Next you can drop the transmission pan yourself and look for material in it. Basically do a visually inspection and service the transmission fluid, gasket, and filter. Remember, all a automatic transmission is a extremely complicated fluid pump. If its pumping trans fluid properly it's probably working just fine. Been when the trans fluid gets hot, scorched, and stops moving. It will not work. Hope this helps

I have a 2004 Envoy slt 4wd auto....The car will shift fine from 1st to 2nd gear but rpms climb and it does't go to 3rd. I tried to maunually shift through gears, but it still doesn't get 3rd?

its most def a purely transmission issue i believe its the solenoids. have it taken to a reputable trans shop near and have them diagnose it with there speciall code reader.

Shifting

Is your code reader capable of reading U, C, and B codes? The speedometer doesn't get it's speed reading from the wheel sensors. It gets it from the transmission. Not shifting past 2nd gear means your transmission is in "limp in" mode. It prevents shifting to avoid further damage. I see a transmission repair shop in your future.

Auto trans shifter shifts p-r-n-d-2-1 it wont shift out of 1st .. sat for 8 months i drove it 50 miles 5 days a week for 9 years serviced reg. never any troubles before i started it i changed oil filter...

There must have been a 'Check Engine' Light? When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis. You'll need an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostics II) code reader. You should find a P07?? number stored (P07??... is a transmission code).

Won't shift

have the check engine light read to see what it is. more than likely an internal trans problem. the code should point you in the right direction

95 Jimmy, Transmission will not shift. Will only drive in 1st. Sometimes if I put into 4 wheel drive it will be fine for a mile or so, then drops back to 1st gear?

could be a speed sensor or a transmission ECM issue, try changing the fluid first then bring it to the dealer they have special transmission ecm code readers that can give a diagnostic reading that will give you an idea of what is going on also before this get under the truck and inspect all plugs and wire to transmission.

1st and 2nd shift error on code reader in trans

Shift error codes are enabled not only if the solonoids are faulty, does your scanner show you the solonoids switching? you could have a wiring fault. It could also be the pcm not allowing the solonoids to activate. These complicated systems are very difficult to diagnose for us profesionals with all the scanners and machines we have. Find a transmission shop in your area with a system to drive the vehicle bypassing the computor system, this will determine electrical or internal trans failure. But before you do anything check your conections from the transmission to the pcm. Also all the engine conectors and earth straps.

The trans has failed, is the OD light on the shift handle blinking? in any event you need to get the transmission control module tested for trouble codes, this will give us some idea of what has happened.
