First try a system restore. if the first restore point doesn't work go back a couple more. If this doesn't do it, then unistall the drivers for the touch pad, sometimes called the synaptic pointing device, from the device manager and reboot. The machine will find the touch pad and automatically reinstall the drivers. If it still doesn't work, then check the connection, they sometimes will work loose or get a little dirt or corrosion build up. If it's still not working at this point, then it is very possible that it has failed and will need replaced.

My scroll up & down bar at the right of my mouse pad is not working. what do I do? I have a hp dv9000

The scroll feature on the mouse pad is controlled by software. Either your software has been disabled, or it's not installed. You can go to HP's website, plug in your laptop model number, and download the software for your mousepad. Here's where you can start:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=1842189&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

You'll need to pick your operating system, and then go find the Synaptics Touchpad software, download it, install it, and that should do it for you. Good luck.

Have a Satellite P 305D-S9800; scoll bar will not pull down by mouse or touch pad; as soon as I let go it jumps back to the top please help

The "Touchpad is very sensitive; if you look while scrolling, the "scroll-bar" will turn (Blue), click on the ("scroll-bar"), until it turn "Gray." Note: "You ca use the Pointer Device / Touchpad without using the Scroll-bar, basically anywhere on the screen; ("bottom scroll-pad" = left to right"), and ("right -side edge scroll-pad = up & down").

The scroll bars on the mousepad don't work

Since it is a Laptop you can not just go over to the Scroll Bar. Move the arrow from the mouse over to the scroll bar. Hold on the left key below the mousepad. The scroll bar should turn a differnt color. Move the scroll bar up and down with your finger, using the mousepad.

Scroll sections on mousepad not working

It's not working because it's either not enabled in your control panel any more, or the driver that allows the scrollbars to be used is not installed. This will happen if you've formatted your computer, or tried uninstalling software you didn't think you needed.

All you have to do is go to Compaq's website, enter the serial number of your computer in the search box, and you should find a Drivers and Downloads type section that will contain a list of all the drivers your computer needs, including the one for your mousepad.

Scroll sections on mousepad not working

almost certainly this means that the drivers for the touchpad have reverted to the windows generic drivers. Try the driver from Compaq here. Sadly, without knowing the OS and exact model number of the laptop I can't be more specific on the link than that. The exact model of the laptop is usually printed on a sticker on the bottom.
