Machine Error 77 is a problem with the temperature of the fuser. The fuser is the hot rollers in the back that melt the powdered toner into the paper, making your image permanent. It's temperature is regulated with a few feedback and safety features to shut it down in case the regulator goes haywire or the sensors stop working. The redundancy in the system is because a runaway heater could be a fire hazard. If any one of the sensors involved doesn't see the temperature it expects, it shuts the whole works down, and puts up an error code.
If this started when you pulled a paper jam out of the back of the machine, you may have accidentally unplugged one of the fuser's cables, but it's unlikely. If you did, it should be hanging in plain sight in the back of the machine.
More likely is that the fuser's heat lamp has burned out, or the thermistor that senses it has gone bad. Some machines have a fuser that can easily be pulled out and replaced, but this one is more difficult, and the teflon-coated rollers are easy to scratch or gouge. I'd recommend taking it to a Brother-authorized service center. Call first and ask if it's worth it.

The screen touch point needs calibrated. If I touch a letter, it activates the letter to the left, etc.

Please see the calibration procedure here:

http://www.sharc.net/discus/messages/6/77.html?1286154637

Please note that if you have to keep recalibrating the touchscreen, then that means it is drifting and needs to be replaced. More info on that here:

Error 77 message

The 77 error is caused by a fuser temperature sensor. The following steps can be used to possibly reset the Intellifax 4100 77 error.

1. Unplug machine then wait 15-20 minutes.
2. Hold down menu key. Plug in machine.
3. Release menu key at maintenance message.
4. press 91 then set button
5. press 99 then set button
6. Machine will warm up.
7. Press Reports key, then press 1. This will test if the machine can
print.
If these steps do not reset the error the thermal fuse would have to be replaced by a repair technician.

Message on machine states error 77, unplug and call brother?

Error 77 basically means- Heater thermistor short circuit. However, the message is sometimes incorrectly shown. You can try this- power off the machine, take out the cartridge, close the door and power up. The machine should notice either the toner or the front door is not in place. Now open the door and place the toner. This might solve the problem. You can also try to soft reset the printer. If none of these works, you might have to change the thermistor.

How does it work?

Hello,

Here are instructions to get the manual for this sensor:

Go to Stanley Support

Click on the "Knowledge Base" link.

When the window opens type 77 115 in the search block and click on "Search". (NOTE: Leave a space between 77 and 115 or this will not work.)

The Instruction manual should be on top of the list that appears.

Click on the link under the "Article Name". (77-115 Intellisensor Plus Instructions)

On the next window click on the small icon under "Format". That will open up a PDF file for you. Save it to your computer for future use.

If you have any trouble, just comment back.

Thanks for using Fixya.
