If you've used the HDMI port or another sort of connector and you're switching to a DIFFERENT connector, you need to default the video output on the PS3. First, you need to plug the PS3 into your tv with just the cables you're going to be using. Then, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. It should beep and a picture should appear on your screen.
To clarify, your TV is working correctly, since you get sound and video from all devices - Only your PS3 has no sound or video?
If your PS3 was previously used with regular AV cables (Red/White/Yellow) then you most likely need to do a PS3 video reset t output video over HDMI.
With the PS3 OFF, press and continue holding the power button until it turns on, beeps twice, and then turns back off. Do not release the power button during this process.
You may have to try the video reset a few times if it doesn't work right away.
After video reset, you should get sound and video over HDMI.
Except for the scrambling and freezing, it sounds like an issue I had recently with my own system. Give this a try and please leave a comment on weather it worked or not.
In Playstation Store, you should download (for free) the PS2 SYSTEM DATA (something like this). if you have formated your system, the files were erased, and the games won't play until you download the backwards comparibility files again.
if someone else has been messing with the ps3 they may have accidently changed your output from hi def to the old ps2 output. try putting your old ps2 av lead into the ps3 and conect it to the tv if the output has been changed its just a matter of changin it back i had this problem so now i dont let anyone play it i hope this can help mate
