Do this on your desktop and download the networking adaptor to a flash drive and then put it on your vista notebook. Once that is installed then you install the rest from your network on the laptop.
Check your network settings. It is probably still configured for dialup. You probably need to deactivate the internet setup for the modem, then run the setup wizard for the lan connection again.
