Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a ride on mower with a 14.5 HP B & S OHV engine. It is very hard to start when cold as it kicks back on the starter motor.

I am sure its not a flooding problem, and I was told that the valve adjustment could be out but I could not relate that to the problem, but as you have explained that the compression release is dependant on the valve adjustment it now makes sense to me. Thank you

You could have more than one problem so I will list the two most common. The compression release is built into valve train and if the valve adjustment is off, the starter motor will not turn the engine over under full compression. You will need to know the model no. of the engine to get the proper valve settings. Also, there have been flooding conditions with some of the carburetors that will cause the combustion chamber to fill with fuel and the engine will not turn over. Hope this is enough information to get you in the right direction.

Starter kicks in but wont turn engine acts like too much compression, battery is fully charged

Very can be if it is an OHV engine that either the valves are needing adjusting or the decompressor has failed.

Most 4 cycle small mower engines have decompressors to help with the starting, These are only active at start-up and does not effect normal engine compression when running.

I need a starter .i have a poulan 15.5 hp ohv i/c rider mower briggs& stratton how much does it cost

Before you shell out a bunch of money for a starter, unless you are sure that is what's wrong, there are a few things to check out first:
1. Safety switches
2. Starting solinoid
3. Ignition switch
4. Battery
Those are for if you have no response whatsoever. If it turns, but barely, check the following:
4. Battery (could have one bad cell and still hold some voltage, try jumpstarting the motor)
5. For over head valve (OHV) engines, adjust the intake and exhaust valves.

I hope this helps.

Locked down motor

Unfortunately it sounds like you threw a connecting rod in other words a blown motor. The connecting rod has become disconnected from the crankshft and is jammed up between the case and the crank itself, the engine must be dissasembled and rebiult.

Yes there is. I don't know from your description whether or not this has a
OHV engine. but if it does this is a common problem. over time the valves
get out of adjustment. thus causing hard starting. the valve lash will have to be adjusted to specs. what happens is the (ACR) automatic compression
release fails to open the exhaust enough thus causing hard starting.
and it kills batteries and starter gear teeth.
