Question about Amana ABB2227DE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

There is a humming sound and then click (relay giving up) it does this about 5 or 6 times and then the compressor starts and runs normally. Could the start capacitor be weak? Doug

Yes it could be, I would check the start capacitor with a Volt meter. Or if you can take it off and have a service center check it for you. Unplug the refrigerator first before you do that. Also the compressor could be going out makeing it harder to start. And if that is the case you could ask the service center if they have a hard start kit for your unit if the start capacitor is OK. Hope this helps.

When the compressor tries to come on, why does it click and hum, then clicks off?

Two causes for that situation. The compressor has a start relay and a overload mounted on the 3 prongs. When the relay/overload is bad, compressor will kick on, hum, then a click sound. The click is the overload. Or, the compressor is drawing too much power and the compressor is bad. 90% of time it's the relay/overload but you need to check and make sure fan is running by compressor and coils underneath are not clogged up. Poor air flow around compressor can cause overload to go bad.

Not freezing or cooling and compressor clicking on and off

From your description it sounds like the start components (start relay, overload and capacitor) are having problems. The clicking you hear is probably the overload kicking out to protect the compressor. It is quite possible that the compressor simply has gotten too hot and after sitting a while will restart when plugged back in. The start components are not generally considered 'user serviceable' parts. When the compressor has cooled to pretty much room temp, plug it in and be listening for those clicks. If you hear them, unplug it because it could eventually damage the compressor. Those components give the compressor an extra jolt to get the compressor running then they drop out of the circuit. If the compressor doesn't start, it creates heat until the overload drops out.

MY dometic AC with anolog tstat will operate fan but does not cool...does not sound like compressor is kicking on ..can anyone give me a troubleshooting sequence on what to do step by step

Hi, just a few thoughts that may help, depending on your level of expertise, I suggest checking the start and run capacitors for the compressor. Then check the coil of the start relay, (usually on the side of the compressor). Can you hear whether the start relay is clicking on. Does the compressor hum or is it dead. Check for continuity between thermostat and compressor start relay

Not cooling; relay clicks; compressor runs for 5 sec then stops.

Is the compressor actually starting or is it humming? If it is humming, then it is probably your capacitor, which would end up costing about $20 for the part, much cheaper than a new refrigerator. I feel that this is most likely your problem. If the compressor has a starting relay, this could also not being operating correctly. If you carefully disconnect the capacitor, you can check the mfd rating with a multimeter. You can also check the starting relay (if applicable) with the multimeter set to measure continuity. Hope this helps. BTW... A new starting relay, called a CCR, or Current Coil Relay, will probably run you about the same, $20.

Friksdge started humming then clic

Sound like the starter/overload relay on the compressor may be bad unless the compressor is locked up or low on freon.

Refrigerator starts -runs for two weeks, compressor won't restart

It might be but I would first check the condenser to see if it's blocked or if the condenser fan (if it has one) is not working. The "buzzing/humming/ticking" sounds you're hearing is the compressor trying to restart after it became locked down. Excessive pressures in the system or compressor overheating is usually the cause although sometimes the bearings in the compressor simply lock up.
Check to see if the fridge cycles on and off by the thermostat. If it doesn't cycle and just keeps running then the thermostat is bad and that can cause compressor failure thanks to "slugging". If it does then you want to check the defrost timer. Turn the timer's dial until it clicks into defrost and see if it comes out on its own. Check if the compressor has trouble starting after defrost. If it stays in defrost the timer is shot. If the timer times out and the compressor will not restart then the relay might be bad or, the compressor might be going bad.
A 3in1 relay/capacitor/overload might help out and give the unit a little longer time but sooner or later it will go.

2006 kenmore frig - freezer and frig are both hot

if both sides are hot it sounds as if the compressor isnt running. pull the refig away from the wall and remove the cardboard cover the compressor is the black bowling ball loking thing that you see. fell to see if it is running should have vibration and making a humming sound. if its not running listen for 3-5 minutes to see if you are hearing an intermittent humming and clicking noise. this would indicate a bad start relay for the compressor. if the compressor is running then you mostlikely have a freon problem which will require a qualified technician to repair. good luck and thanks for using fixya Peyton..

When compressor clicks on it makes funny electrical humming sound and then makes click sound and does not get cold. the compressor feels hot.

sounds like a bad compressor to me, you should have 5 yr full warr on compressor, if over 5 years you can try to replace the overload relay assy attached to the side of the compressor

Fridge not cold. freezer frosting up. fridge running all the time . Something sounds like it is trying to start but it will not start

If you are getting a hum for about 5-10 seconds followed by a click, tht is the compressor short cycling. You may have a bad compressor relay, or the compressor itself could be bad. If the frost your seeing is on the back wall of the fredezer that could indicate a defrost problem.

Kenmore (253.51399104)side by side making buzzing/humming noise

It will rattle slightly, this is normal. The ones that are burned out will sound like they have gravel in them, you can defininely tell something is wrong.
The problem with diagnosing Kenmore fridges with this problem is that there are different manufacturers. Yours is built by Frigidaire and probably has a Tecumseh compressor. We find more failed compressors with the Tecumsehs than we do with the models that have Embraco compressors. The models with Embraco's generally have more relay failures.

You should not hear the buzz/hum at startup. You will need to replace the compressor, which will be replaced at no charge to you if it is less than 5 yrs old.
If it is older than 5 yrs, you can have it replaced, but it will be almost as expensive as a new fridge. You can buy an aftermarket start device called a 3-in-1. This has a start capacitor built in to give it a little more boost on start up. I don't recommend using them unless it is a short term fix until the compressor can be replaced or if it is out of warranty and there is nothing to lose anyway.
