You may have hit a certain combination of keys on your Gateway laptop and turned on the NumLock function accidentally. The result is that the rectangle of keys from the 7 key down to the question mark key have become a number-entry keypad. Worse, Gateway manuals don't discuss this function.
Hold down the "Fn" key on the bottom row of the keyboard, and press the "NumLk" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. Hold down the "Fn" key and press the "F11" key. Type the letters UIO. If they come out as numbers, move on to the next step. HI, If you Are writing numbers instead of letters when you press the
keyboard of your laptop and you must hold down the Function key (Fn) to
write normally.
This is due to the fact that the digital lock is activated. To solve
this, simply press the Fn+Numlk or depending of the model, press the
button or Fn + Shift +Numlk
I have the same problem. Click the Windows start button. At the bottom is a Windows Serach box. Type 'keyboard'. A virtual keyboard appears. Click the NumLock key on the Virtual Keyboard. This should override the issue you are having and your keyboard and keys should now work. Otherwise reboot!
This means that NUM LOCK is set to on. All you have to do is to press the Fn key and then locate the NumLock key and press it. The num lock is usually also highlighted with the same color as the Fn key.

You need to press the NUM Lock key.
