Question about GE 46GW947 46" Rear Projection Television

I have a GE Big Screen Tv with Guide plus. model number 46GW948. my son got into factory settings and set the tv in some sort fo 3D setting. the red, green and blue need to be adjusted. Can you help me with this problem? Thanks

    thank you for that advice, but i cant find the menu to adjust that setting. can you tell me how to get that screen. i have looked under every menu option and cant find it.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....


  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Projection TV sets are known to have two common problems. The first problem that is common to these sets is convergence failure. When this happens the TV will usually look 3D, Wavy/Distorted, etc. It may also shutdown and blink an error code.

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded over.

this set had a convergence problem where a diode on the separate power board causes the convergence to be way out. Also if it has the "Guide Plus" you may be missing items in the main menu-----in the guide menu set it so you show you have no cable box, no vcr, and set the zip code for 99999----if this has been helpful please indicate with a vote for me.

If the diode is bad---it should be an easy fix for almost any technician who comes to your home.

Ge tv screen look like 3d
Sounds like your convergence circuit is shot.Its the most common failure with rear projection sets since they all use the same type of parts. 90% of the time 2 big IC chips called STKs fail along with maybe a fuse or resistor in that circuit. You could be charged $300-400 depending who you get to repair. Or buy the STKs and try it yourself if your handy with a soldering iron.

i hope this helps. on the tv, press menu, then channel up or down to "screen", then menu;
then channel up or down for adjust projection tv(6), then press menu;
then use the volume up and down, as well as the channel up and down until each of the 3 colors are lined up. press menu after each color i slined up to go to the next color.

HI. I have an older projection tv. None of my inputs appear to work anymore. I was using video input 1 since I got the tv years ago. A few months ago I fell asleep with the tv on. When I woke up, the picture was snow and the sound was static. I tried Input #2 and same thing. I switched to the s cable hook up and bingo, I had picture and sound again. Last night I fell asleep with the tv on and woke up to snow on the screen and the sound of static. Any ideas of what the problem is? Other than falling asleep with the tv on? LOL Any help appreciated. Thanks!!
