Question about Toshiba Computers & Internet

2 Answers

This computer worked fine for two years and then started freezing up and had to be hard booted each time. The problem got worse but never predictable as to time frame. Seemed to be only when connected to a/c but later on battery also. I have had the hard drive replaced, the ram memory and the operating system from vista to xp pro with no help.I have the unit down to the mother board and the heat sink is clean. What next? Thanks in advance.

With your answer I checked on a replacement. I have a new Toshiba 655 that uses the same ac adapter. I have used it to charge the Toshiba p205d
in question. I'm pretty certain that this eliminates the adapter issue?

I have two Toshiba computers and they use the same ac adapters. I have used the charger from my A665 computer to charge the old P205. It didn't make any difference, same problems.

It's possible the ac adapter may be faulty and is putting out the wrong voltage. The voltage being wrong can cause freezing, touch pad problems, etc.Other than that it would most likely still be one of the things you said you replaced that's bad.Usually the hard drive.

As I understand it, SMART is correct 50-60% of the time...means it's wrong 40-50% of the time.But..You can't take the risk, you have to assume something is wrong with your hard drive. So, i f you have important data there, go to a repair shop and they can save data from your hard drive and replace it, if necessary. If you want to solve it on our own, you need a boot cd with error checking. Any live boot cd with linux does that. Also, there are several live boot cds like Hiren's Boot, with rescue options.

Smart Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 4

Are you sure you don't have a usb or other device plugged into your computer. Your main hard drive should be disc 0. Disc 4 is usually a disc further down the line, like an external or something like that. If it indeed the case then you may be having a problem with the boot in your primary drive. Try booting the disc with a windows installation disc. load the dosc and boot, when it says so, hit any key to boot off cd. When windows loads, hit repair this installation. It will reboot when it is ready. If that doesn't take care of it, reload the disc again and try to restore the drive to an earlier time, like a day or two ago. If this doesn't work, you may have to get another hard drive and reload the system. Don't get rod of the other hard drive though because you may still be able to access the personal files off of it as long as it hasn't had a mechanical or electrical problem keeping it from spinning.

Tecra 8100 Freezes shortly after Windows comes up

Go into your hard disk utility and defragment your file. When the computer writes to your hard disk over time these files no longer are sequential as they were in the beginning. This is one solution, also you can do a disk recovery using your original disk or by pressing F10 as it boots up. Be sure and do a good check for viruses as well. The symptom you are describing sounds alot like a virus that is slowing your system down more and more. Good luck.

If you know how to open your computer all you have to do is press all the wires in there it maybe dew to loose connection. then try booting it up again be sure it has a system already. If still didn't work out no other solution but to replace the hard disk.

Posted Oct 13, 2006 - It's not the drives that fail, it's the power supplies... They fry after about 3 months-1.5 years. LaCie sells replacements for about $16-$20, dpeneding on the model. We have over 20 of these drives, and here's how you know: the drive spins up, then down - it tries to mount, data transfer will freeze, etc. Just put another power supply on it, and 9 times out of 10, it's fine. Of course, any drive can fry on you, but these have proven to be extremely reliable under some of the hardest use imaginable.

When you turn the computer on it says SMART Failer predicted on hard disk 0: HTS54108G9SA00-(S1)

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a diagnostic method originally developed by IBM that at that time referred to as "Predictive Failure Analysis". This technology was developed for IBM mainframe drives to give advanced warning of drive failures. Based on this diagnostic, Compaq announced IntelliSafeTM, which was submitted to the ATA/IDE standards committees and the resulting standard was named S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. analyzes many of the mechanical attributes; over time, some failures can be predicted by detecting if the hard disk drive is moving out of tolerance. While the S.M.A.R.T. technology can detect upcoming issues, not all hard drive failures are predictable.

All this means on most modern drives is the hard drive is coming close to the maximum tolerances

I usually switch off in the bios smart monitoring.

This system is trying to predict a possible failure, which may or may not occur..
