Linksys e3000 router. I am able to connect to the router without typing in a password. Under encryption on the computer its states "none". How do I enable encryption on the e3000? Thanks.

Hi ,

To reset the Linksys back to the default settings - Press and hold the pinhole RESET button at the back of the router with the power ON for 20 secs. then release the RESET button.
To connect to your wireless router, the router's wireless settings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also the wireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down and put it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2 encryption.
Now apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

How to replace linksys-g home router with linksys e3000

Use the laptop with a network cable to check connection. Just connect the NEW? e3000 to the ISP modem. It should work right from the start. If the e3000 is not new, there is a reset in the back.Hold it till it cycles.

The wireless on the laptop should pick up the new router as a new network.

You can even go further back by cycling the ISP modem as well.

If you do not have the 'access' key, you must 'hard reset' the router. Please see attached image.

Welcome to Fixya. You don't need to reinstall the cd of the router, You can access the router page so that you will be able to obtain the password or Network Key.

ITo access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is admin and the password is admin.

Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security look for the Network Key or Passphrase. You can personalize your Network Key. The Network Key serves as a password on your network to make it secure. Then Save the settings

You have to update the wireless adapter driver on the toshiba website. I'm guessing you have an Atheros adapter because those usually have this problem. The driver is not advanced enough to log onto a WPA or WPA2 encryption, WEP will work fine. The driver updates have a 50/50 chance of fixing the problem otherwise you are stuck with WEP.

Set up a Linksys Wireless Router

1 Choose and purchase a Linksys router, taking into account your budget and computing habits.

2 Attach the antennas to the Linksys wireless router.

3 Place the router in a central location, making sure it's not surrounded by metal. (A signal can't be obtained through metal.) The router should be located so that the distance between clients (computers) is somewhat equal. This will create a better connection.

4 Plug the Ethernet cable into the "Internet" port on the back of the Linksys router.

5 Connect a computer to the router by plugging another Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your computer and attaching the other end to one of the available ports on the back of the router. You can choose any port except the one labeled "WAN."

6 Plug the router into an electrical outlet.

7 Wait for the power light to stop flashing, at which time the router is finished booting up. While the router is booting, the power light will be blinking. This process may take a few minutes to complete.

8 Reboot your computer so it can access a new IP address from the router through the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

Configure the Router

1 Open your web browser, type " http://192.168.1.1/ " into the address bar and hit "Enter."

2 Use "Admin" as the username in the pop-up box and leave the password blank.

3 Connect to the Internet and click on "Internet Setup."

4 Select your connection type from the drop-down menu. Choose "DHCP" for cable modems or "PPPoE" for most DSL modems. If you are unsure of these options, check with your ISP.

5 Set a service set identifier (SSID) to identify the router and change the password.

6 Encrypt your wireless connection using a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key. Under the "Wireless Security" option, enter a passphrase and click "Generate." This will generate a password which will need to be used by any client connecting to your router.

I have my linksys wrt160n connected but with no password, i cant find my install cd. i want to set a password.

Take it easy. You don't need any installation cd. Connect your computer with the router and after the connection between pc - router established, click on start - run and at the white line type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter. At the new black window type "ipconfig" and hit enter. Write down the numbers at the last line referring for Default Gateway. Open a browser window and at the address bar type the number you write down before and hit enter, without www etc at the beginning. You will go at the router's entry settings page. In case you don't know the user - password I have to tell you that the default credentials for Linksys routers are:
for user type "admin", without the quotes
for password type "admin'' or"1234" or none, without the quotes. Now on you can change any settings as you like.
In case of the above procedure don't work, locate and press the reset button in order to get the router at the default setting and retry the procedure.

You want to secure the wireless network.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router with the cable.
Check the IP address on the computer. Open the router set up page.
Once you open the set up page, you will find the option to make it secured

Open Internet Explorer.
Type 'http://192.168.0.1' (or try 'http://192.168.1.1').
This will connect to the built-in web-server inside the Linksys router.
Click to run the 'Wireless Networking Setup Wizard',
and choose an SSID and choose a password-code.

Open the web browser on your computer and type ''http://192.168.1.1". This address will open the configuration page for the router. When you are prompted for a login name and password to begin configuration, just type 'admin' in both boxes to gain access.

Enable WPA2 Encryption
Under the wireless security tab, enable WPA2 encryption by ticking the appropriate check box. This will encrypt all data that is transmitted over the network. If the data is intercepted by anyone, they will find it to be garbled data. To enable this setting, check out the 'Wireless Security' tab. Choose a long passphrase to use and write it down exactly, because you will have to enter this passphrase on every wireless device you want to connect to to router. (laptop, Wii, BluRay, iTouch, etc)
