Recently upgraded to DirecTV HD service...new larger HD dish (non-SWM). Works great on my newer dvr's but the older Samsung SIR-S4040R won't get a signal...does the older dvr need a special filter, or should straight cable work? What should be the normal guided setup options for this dvr with newer HD dish?

You will have to "Find space" by deleting something/anything to make "space" for "New" material. Basically it is trying to tell you the drive is filled up and ya need to either delete or cut & paste away to some other media, some data, to get more space to record more stuff. OK?

Have you tried rebooting the DVR and removing the card that came with the DVR if its one that was provided to by one of the satellite company's such as Directv or Dish.

You will not be able to record local station from a DTV converter connected thru a directv receiver unless there is a a/v input on the directv samsung receiver. Also check the user manual for this receiver if recording from an external source such as a DTV converter box is possible. The answer to seperating the DTV converter box from the directv samsung receiver is possible if your tv has multiple inputs. Try connecting the DTV box to the RF input and the directv samsung box to an a/v input then change inputs using the tv remote. you will need an av cable (yellow/ red/white) for the directv box and a rf jumper cable for the DTV box.

Call customer service and ask for compatible receivers at no cost since they upgraded your odu (outside dish unit) and left you with no service in 2 rooms. Let them know how upset you are and demand an answer to why the technician left you without SWiM compatible receivers in all the rooms. Call 800 531 5000 and request to speak with a supervisor. They have the authority to override. If customer service dept does not cooperate then ask to be transferred to the customer retention dept. You will get results there. Remember you are the customer not them. Good luck!

Hello: If you have only one incoming cable, just hook it up on SAT 1. What happens is that you will only be able to record what you're watching. If you want two incoming cables, just change the LNB to a dual LNB if you have a round dish. If you have an oval dish, most likely has a multiswitch LNB, so all you need to do is hook up another cable to that LNB and run it to the receiver and put it on SAT 2.
This way, you can watch one program and record another program on a dif. channel at the same time. Either way, you need to take out the LNB from the dish for one or the other option. It's best to contact your service provider and get a tech, to do the changes. It's not costly.

hold in the power button for at least 10 seconds. It should reboot. If not the DVR needs to be replaced.

Your hard drive may have crashed. Can you hear any disk activity when you plug in the unit? The hard drive can be replaced, but probably better to either just get a replacement unit (you can get them on eBay for $40 or less) or upgrade to a newer receiver.

I also have directv.At this point,it is a video signal issue on their end.The up conversion is ok at best.Depending on the original video that is probably as good as it gets.The other problem is the wow factor from hd.It is hard not to be critical of the non-hd channels.
