I have an old Dell latitude C800 laptop. I recently purachased a 120gb HR to replace the 40 gb that crashed and no longer works. I placed the connector on the new drive and placed into the laptop. When I start the computer I pressed F2 and entered into the bios. The bios version is A09. The bios does not recohnize the hardware nor the optical CD drive. Do I need to format the drve? Do I upgrade the bios to A23? Thanks

Upgrade the BIOS regardless, and yes check if by A23 release the hard drive you are trying to install will be supported.

You are several BIOS versions behind.

SOURCE: just re installed windows xp on new hard drive, built-in speakers no longer functioning

Visit support.dell.com, click on drivers and downloads, and then click on the service tag option.... enter the service tag from the bottom side of the laptop... it will then display the list of drivers for that laptop.

Download and install the audio drivers and any other ones that you need.... let me know if that solves it for you. Make sure they are for your laptop model and operating system.

You might be able to get some more memory for it and a bigger hard drive. Depends on what the model number is.

SOURCE: Latitude C800 Memory slots

Go to www.crucial.com allow their program to run on your machine and it will give you a report on what memory you can fit

If you are in the UK it is www.crucial.com/uk

More to the point it will tell you what is the maximum memory the machine will take

Crucial also supply memory at good prices and to date nothing they have supplied me with has failed to work

I'm not sure that there is an "Optimum" hard drive for your Latitude. If you are replacing hdds this quickly there is something else that is causing them to fail. Nearly all hdds have a minimum of 3 year warranty and many have a 5 year warranty. If you are having multiple failures less than 5 months out on every hdd then the issue is likely with the Latitude and not the hdd. Your power supply/brick may be the issue.

The fact that this brand and model of laptop were reviewed by laptop review back in 2006 tells me that this laptop is well past its life expectancy. IMHO it is time to upgrade and stop wasting your time on old (10 years +) equipment.

I have a Dell Latitude C800 and i cant get past the power-on BIOS password. Can you please help?

You can get the master password for your Dell by calling Dell Technical Support at (800)624-9896.
Dell Technical Support will request the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the bottom of your Latitude.
If you were not the original owner of the Latitude, Dell will transfer registration of the used Latitude from the original owner with only the Service Tag and Express Service Code from the tag on the laptop.
To transfer the registration of a used Dell Latitude, fill out the Transfer of Ownership form on Dell's web site.
